Palmar Pill Recipe and Farming

Append Improvise unlock method, comprehensive farming spots, longcorn alternative, and Reindeer Cloak guide
The Palmar Pill is one of the most valuable consumable items in Crimson Desert. It provides a self-revive effect: when you die with a Palmar Pill in your inventory, you are brought back to life on the spot at approximately 30% health. You do not return to a checkpoint, you do not lose progress on a boss fight, and you do not need to restart the encounter. You simply get back up and keep fighting.
Palmar Pills can be found occasionally while exploring the open world, tucked into chests, loot drops, and hidden alcoves. However, relying on random discoveries makes them feel scarce and unreliable. The real power of the Palmar Pill comes from learning its recipe, which allows you to craft as many as you want using gathered materials. With the recipe in hand, you can stockpile a full stack before every boss fight and eliminate the fear of a single mistake ending your run.
There is also an upgraded version called the Refined Palmar Pill, which provides a stronger revive effect. This guide focuses on the standard Palmar Pill, which is available much earlier and serves as the foundation for the upgraded variant.
Understanding exactly how the self-revive works helps you use Palmar Pills more effectively in combat.
Activation: When your health reaches zero and you have at least one Palmar Pill in your inventory, the self-revive triggers automatically. You do not need to press a button or activate it manually.
Health Recovery: You are revived at approximately 30% of your maximum health. This gives you enough of a buffer to dodge away, heal up, or land a few hits before needing to worry about dying again.
Position: You revive at the exact spot where you fell. The boss or enemies do not reset, and any damage you dealt before dying is preserved. This is what makes Palmar Pills so powerful for boss encounters.
Consumption: Each self-revive consumes one Palmar Pill from your inventory. If you have multiple pills, only one is used per death. You can die and revive multiple times in a single fight as long as you have enough pills.
Cooldown: There is no cooldown between self-revives. If you die again immediately after reviving, another pill will be consumed and you will be brought back once more.
There are two ways to obtain the Palmar Pill crafting recipe. The fast method gets you the recipe extremely early in the game with minimal effort. The slow method involves a longer questline but rewards you with additional items and experience along the way.
The fastest way to get the Palmar Pill recipe is to visit Shadow's Whisper Cave, located near Hernand Castle. This method can be done very early in the game, potentially within the first few hours of play.
Open your map and locate Hernand Castle. There is a fast travel point near the castle that you may have already unlocked.
Travel to the fast travel point by Hernand Castle. Once you arrive, look for a gap or crevice near the cliff edge.
Jump down through the gap. This leads into Shadow's Whisper Cave, a small cave system beneath the castle area.
Explore the cave interior. The Palmar Pill recipe is found inside, typically in a chest or loot container within the main chamber.
Pick up the recipe. It is added to your crafting knowledge immediately, and you can begin crafting Palmar Pills at any cooking station.
The cave itself is not particularly dangerous at early levels, but you may encounter a few enemies inside. Bring basic healing items just in case. The entire trip from the fast travel point to picking up the recipe takes only a few minutes.
The alternative path to the Palmar Pill recipe goes through the town of Porin and the associated Shy Village questline. This method involves multiple steps.
Travel to Porin and speak with the NPCs in the Shy Village area.
Accept the quest chain that involves gathering materials and completing tasks for the village residents.
Complete the required quests. These involve running between locations, gathering items, and waiting for research time to finish.
Once the questline is complete, the Palmar Pill recipe is unlocked as a reward.
This method takes significantly longer than the Shadow's Whisper Cave route. The quests involve multiple trips, waiting periods, and intermediate objectives. However, the Shy Village questline also rewards you with other useful recipes, NPC trust increases, and experience points. If you are already in the Porin area and want to complete the local content, this is a natural way to pick up the recipe while progressing through side content.
For most players, the fast method is strongly recommended. Getting the recipe early means you can start stockpiling Palmar Pills before you encounter any of the game's tougher bosses. There is no downside to grabbing the recipe from Shadow's Whisper Cave first and then doing the Shy Village quests later for their other rewards.
Since the fast method is the recommended approach, here is a more detailed breakdown of how to find Shadow's Whisper Cave.
Detail | Information |
|---|---|
Region | Hernand Castle area |
Nearest Fast Travel | Fast travel point by Hernand Castle |
Entrance | Jump down a gap/crevice near the cliff edge |
Difficulty | Low (a few basic enemies inside) |
Reward | Palmar Pill recipe |
Time Required | 2 to 5 minutes from the fast travel point |
The entrance can be easy to miss if you are not specifically looking for it. When you arrive at the fast travel point, face toward the castle and look for a narrow gap in the rocky terrain near the cliff. The gap leads downward into the cave. If you are having trouble finding it, try walking along the cliff edge and watching for a prompt to jump or drop down.
Once you have the recipe, crafting Palmar Pills is straightforward. Open any crafting or cooking station and navigate to the consumables or medicine category. Select the Palmar Pill recipe and craft as many as your materials allow.
The ingredients come from gathering nodes scattered across the open world. Herbs, flowers, and other botanical materials are the primary components. Keep an eye out for gathering nodes while exploring, and pick up everything you find. Even if you do not need the materials immediately, they stack in your inventory and will be ready when you need to craft a fresh batch of pills.
While gathering materials organically during exploration works, dedicated farming runs can help you build up a large stockpile quickly. There are several good early-game locations where the materials needed for Palmar Pills spawn reliably.
Gather everything. Do not skip gathering nodes even if you think you have enough materials. Palmar Pills are something you will use throughout the entire game, so having a surplus is always better than running short before a boss.
Check fields and meadows. The herbal ingredients for Palmar Pills are most commonly found in grassy, open areas. Farmland, meadows, and forest clearings tend to have the highest density of gathering nodes.
Use gathering routes. Plan a circular route that passes through multiple gathering clusters. Fast travel to a waypoint, gather all nearby nodes, then move to the next cluster. Repeat until you have enough materials.
Combine with other farming. Many of the same areas where you farm Palmar Pill ingredients also contain materials for cooking recipes and other consumables. Double up your farming runs to be efficient with your time.
The areas around Hernand and the surrounding farmlands are excellent starting points. These regions have a high density of herbal gathering nodes and are accessible very early in the game. As you progress further and unlock more of the map, you will discover additional farming spots with higher-tier materials.
For a deeper look at farming routes and material locations, see the Farming guide and the Gathering overview.
Palmar Pills are at their most valuable during boss encounters. A single boss fight can be the difference between 20 minutes of progress and a frustrating restart. Here is how to make the most of your Palmar Pill supply.
Stock up before every boss. Make it a habit to craft a full stack of Palmar Pills before attempting any major boss fight. Having 5 to 10 pills gives you a substantial safety net.
Do not rely on them as a crutch. Palmar Pills are a safety net, not a strategy. Use them to recover from mistakes while you learn a boss's attack patterns. Once you know the fight, you should need fewer pills each attempt.
Combine with other healing. Palmar Pills revive you at 30% health, which is not a lot. After reviving, immediately use a standard healing item or dodge away to create distance before the boss attacks again.
Consider the Refined Palmar Pill. For late-game bosses, the Refined Palmar Pill provides a stronger revive effect. If you have access to the refined version, use those for the hardest encounters and save standard pills for regular exploration.
Keep pills in your active inventory. Make sure Palmar Pills are in your consumable slots, not buried in storage. The self-revive only triggers if the pills are on your character.

The Refined Palmar Pill recipe is normally a story unlock, but you can teach it to yourself early at any cauldron by using the Improvise system. Any cauldron in the open world or at your home base works, though the cauldron in Harnandes is universally easy to reach from any chapter of the campaign and is the recommended choice for an early unlock.
Open the cauldron, press the Improvise button in the bottom right of the menu, and place exactly one of each ingredient in the following order:
Water
Press triangle to make the pill. The crafting animation can be skipped. After each successful Improvise craft, the top-left corner of the screen will read "Recipe discovered" and fill the recipe knowledge bar by roughly 25 to 30 percent. Repeat the same Improvise input two or three more times until the bar fills and the message changes to "Refined Palmar Pill knowledge acquired," at which point the recipe is permanently unlocked under the Special Items tab and can be batch-crafted from the regular cauldron menu.
The Improvise recipe needs regular Ginseng, NOT Wild Ginseng. This is the single most common mistake players make. The two items share the same picture in the inventory, but Wild Ginseng will not satisfy the Improvise input and the craft will fail with no recipe progress. If you have been farming wild ginseng for other recipes, set those aside and look specifically for plain Ginseng before attempting the Improvise unlock.
The leaf and beetle ingredients share the same farming nodes, so a single trip nets both. Each gathering pull is RNG-based: most pulls return nothing, but a successful pull usually drops two or three leaves at once, sometimes more. The Kuku Gardening Pack auto-gathers every leaf in range when you press L2 and R2 together, but it is unlocked late in the game and can occasionally trigger a steal flag, so be ready to sprint out of the red circle.
Region | Spot | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Pit with massive central tree, surrounded by water | From the nearby fast travel point, jump and use a triple aerial force palm, then glide toward the marker. The leaves grow around the rim of the pit. | |
Mountain of the Frozen Soul, far south of Harnandes | Open spawning area, easy to circle on foot. | |
Massive patch of leaves directly around the southern elder tree where one of the legendary animals roams. | ||
Harnandian ruins on the left side of the map | Beetles stand out clearly between leaf patches here, making this the easiest spot for the harder-to-spot beetles. |
Palmar beetles look like small leaves on the ground but are noticeably more glowy than the regular palmar leaves they spawn alongside. The interact prompt will explicitly read "Palmar Beetle." Two birds, one stone: every leaf-farming run also yields beetles.
Ginseng farming requires sneaking into the Scholar's Stone Institute garden in a mask and stealing from red-flagged flowers, or buying small stacks from a merchant in Paloon after Chapter 9 reconstruction. Both are slow. The faster option is to substitute Longcorn, harvested from antlered deer in a single repeatable loop.
Fast travel to the camp.
Run south of camp along the deer paths. Three packs of deer spawn in series along the route.
Only kill the deer that have antlers. Each antlered deer drops two to four longcorns. Letting the antler-less deer live ensures the pack respawns when you loop back.
A Poison Arrow one-shots the antlered deer.
After clearing the third pack, fast travel back to the camp and repeat. The packs respawn every loop.
Antlered deer are random spawns, so some packs will have none. Skip those packs and check the next one rather than wasting time waiting for a respawn. Two full loops typically yield around ten longcorns, which is enough for a sizable batch of refined pills.
The Reindeer Cloak gives the deer disguise effect, which prevents the deer from running away when you approach. This makes the antler check at each pack significantly faster: walk straight up to the deer instead of stalking from a distance, identify the antlered ones, and drop them with a poison arrow before the rest react. The cloak also grants high ice resistance, useful in the colder regions of the Scholar's Stone Institute area.
Travel to the Scholar's Stone Institute area, specifically the cluster of caves on the southwest side of the map adjacent to the farming patch.
Locate the fake wall in the cave (it looks like an ordinary cave wall but does not match the surrounding texture).
Press L3 and R3 together to enter focused stance, then hold R3 to charge a focused force palm. Wait until the targeting sphere actually glows before releasing.
The fake wall dissipates and reveals the cloak inside. If the pickup prompt does not appear, axiom-grip the cloak to pick it up (this is a known workaround for an early-version bug).
The Refined Palmar Pill is the golden tier upgrade over the standard pill and is intended for tougher boss fights and difficult combat encounters. Once the recipe is unlocked, batch-craft a stack at any cauldron and bring them to any fight where the standard pill is not enough.
