Initial version with horse inventory, stable services, and character background
Merton is the stablekeeper of Hernand, managing the Hernand Stable in the City of Hernand. Once renowned for his exceptional riding skills, he served as a courier for House Celeste in his younger days, delivering messages across the Hernand region on horseback. Now retired from courier work, he runs the stables near Hernand Castle and sells horses to players looking for a reliable mount. Merton is one of the few vendors in the game who sells living mounts rather than equipment or consumables.
The Hernand Stable is near Hernand Castle in the City of Hernand. You can hear the horses before you see the stable. Merton is usually out in the yard near the stalls rather than behind a counter.
Merton sells two horse breeds. The Herspia is available in two units (possibly different color variants), while the Priden is rarer with only one in stock. Both are solid mounts for the early and mid game.
Horse | Stock | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Herspia | 2 | 2.64 Silver | Available in different colors |
Priden | 1 | 3.43 Silver | Single unit, higher tier |
Beyond selling horses, Merton provides stable management services. You can board your horses at his stable for safekeeping, retrieve horses you've previously stabled, and manage your mount collection. The stable acts as your horse storage, so if you own multiple mounts, this is where you switch between them.
The Herspia is an affordable, well-rounded horse breed suitable for general riding and early combat. Merton stocks two Herspia horses, each available in different colors, so you can pick the one you like best. At 2.64 Silver each, the Herspia is the budget-friendly option for players who need a mount quickly.
The Priden is a step up from the Herspia in terms of base stats, priced at 3.43 Silver. Only one is available, making it the rarer of the two options at Merton's stable. If you can afford the extra cost, the Priden offers better performance for travel and mounted combat.
If this is your first horse purchase, the Herspia at 2.64 Silver is a solid starting mount. You can always upgrade later.
The Priden costs 3.43 Silver, which is only 79 Copper more than the Herspia. If you have the funds, the stat difference makes the Priden the better investment.
After buying a horse from Merton, visit Annabella at the Saddlery next door to equip it with horseshoes, a saddle, and stirrups. A properly equipped horse performs noticeably better than a bare one.
Use Merton's boarding service before switching to a different mount. Horses left out in the world can wander off, but stabled horses are always safe.
Merton's riding experience from his courier days means he knows horses well. Talk to him for general tips about horse care and handling if the dialogue option appears.
