The Kuku Bird Hatchling is one of the most unique temporary mounts in Crimson Desert. Classified as a Flying type mount, it is a large flightless bird that is prized for its gliding ability. While it cannot generate upward lift or sustain true flight, the Kuku Bird Hatchling allows riders to glide safely from elevated positions and land without taking fall damage.

The Kuku Bird Hatchling stands out among temporary mounts for another reason: it is one of the few that remains docile after dismounting. Unlike bears or wolves that turn hostile the moment you step off, the Kuku Bird Hatchling will wander peacefully nearby and can even be re-mounted. This makes it one of the most forgiving temporary mounts in the game, despite its somewhat involved acquisition process.
Despite being classified as a Flying mount, the Kuku Bird Hatchling's stats reflect a creature built for gliding and traversal rather than combat:
The Kuku Bird Hatchling has 400 Health and 300 Stamina, giving it solid endurance. Its low Attack of 25 confirms that it is not designed for mounted combat. The Defense of 50 provides moderate protection during gliding descents that may take you through hostile territory. As a temporary mount, these stats are fixed.
Kuku Bird Hatchlings are found in the Steel Mountains, specifically east of the Spire of Insight. They do not appear as wild creatures roaming freely. Instead, they serve as mounts for Blinding Arrow soldiers who patrol the mountain paths and ridgelines in this area.
The Steel Mountains are a high-altitude region with steep cliffs and narrow trails, which makes the Kuku Bird Hatchling's gliding ability particularly useful here. Look for Blinding Arrow soldiers mounted on large bird-like creatures along the eastern slopes near the Spire of Insight.
Acquiring a Kuku Bird Hatchling requires two steps:
Defeat the Blinding Arrow soldier riding the Kuku Bird. Engage the enemy in combat and either kill them or knock them off the bird. Standard combat techniques work here. Watch for the soldier's ranged attacks, as Blinding Arrow troops often use bows.
Chase and mount the bird before it escapes. Once the rider is down, the Kuku Bird Hatchling will attempt to flee at high speed. You need to sprint after it and press the mount button (Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox) when the prompt appears. If the bird gets too far away, you will miss your chance.
After you have successfully ridden a Kuku Bird Hatchling for the first time, the bird becomes non-hostile and will not flee or attack you if you encounter another one. This makes subsequent encounters easier, though you still need to defeat the rider first.
The primary reason to seek out a Kuku Bird Hatchling is its gliding capability. While riding the bird, you can jump off ledges and cliffs to enter a gliding state. During the glide, you retain full directional control, allowing you to steer toward your desired landing spot.
Key points about gliding with the Kuku Bird Hatchling:
The bird cannot gain altitude. Gliding always moves you downward at a gradual angle.
You take no fall damage when landing from a glide, regardless of the height you started from.
You maintain directional control throughout the descent. Use the movement stick to steer left, right, and adjust your glide angle.
The glide distance depends on your starting elevation. Launching from the highest peaks in the Steel Mountains can carry you a considerable distance across the map.
Gliding consumes stamina at a moderate rate. With 300 Stamina, you have plenty of airtime for most descents.
The Kuku Bird Hatchling is unique among temporary mounts because it does not turn hostile after dismounting. When you step off, the bird will calmly wander the area nearby. You can re-mount it without any combat or chase sequence. This peaceful dismount behavior makes the Kuku Bird Hatchling the most convenient temporary mount in the game.
However, like all temporary mounts, the Kuku Bird Hatchling cannot be registered at a stable or summoned on demand. If you leave the area and the bird despawns, you will need to find another one by defeating a Blinding Arrow soldier.
Seek out Kuku Bird Hatchlings near cliffs and high vantage points in the Steel Mountains. The gliding ability is most valuable when you have a long drop to work with.
Act quickly after defeating the Blinding Arrow rider. The bird starts fleeing immediately, and the window to mount it is short.
Since the bird remains docile after dismounting, you can park it at a high point, explore on foot, then return to it for another glide.
The Kuku Bird Hatchling works as an excellent shortcut for descending from the Steel Mountains to lower regions without needing to backtrack along winding paths.
