Greysoul Howling is an Abyss Core in Crimson Desert that calls forth a phantom afterimage of the player, unleashing a sweeping strike of shadow energy. It becomes available after completing Chapter 9 of the main story. Greysoul Howling is widely considered one of the absolute best abyss cores in the game, particularly for players who build around the turning slash playstyle.
When Greysoul Howling is equipped, performing a turning slash creates an afterimage of Kliff that strikes again immediately after the initial attack. This afterimage follows the same trajectory as the player's turning slash and lands its own separate hit on the target. The result is that every turning slash effectively delivers two full hits instead of one, with the afterimage replicating the motion and damage of the original attack.
The afterimage appears as a translucent shadow of the player character, swinging in the same arc. The visual effect makes it clear when the core is triggering, and the second strike lands almost simultaneously with the first.
Greysoul Howling is devastatingly effective in practice. In side-by-side testing, the afterimage follow-up alone took approximately half of an enemy's HP away, and that was without counting the damage from the initial turning slash itself. This means the core effectively doubles turning slash damage output.
The testing was conducted with a sword that had only been refined three times, not the maximum four refinements used in other tests. Even with this disadvantage in weapon power, Greysoul Howling still produced devastating results, confirming that the core's damage scaling is extremely strong relative to other options.
When combined with Ground Surge, these two cores form the foundation of the strongest known turning slash build. Ground Surge provides a fire spike explosion on turning slash hits, and Greysoul Howling doubles the base turning slash damage. Together, they make turning slash the single highest-damage melee option available.
Greysoul Howling becomes available after the player completes Chapter 9 of the main story. The exact acquisition method involves progression through the story's abyss-related content. Players should prioritize obtaining this core as soon as it becomes accessible, since it is one of the most impactful upgrades for melee builds.
Greysoul Howling works best as part of a fire-imbued turning slash build. The following setup maximizes damage output:
Slot | Recommended Gear | Role |
|---|---|---|
Core 1 | Greysoul Howling | Doubles turning slash damage via afterimage |
Core 2 | Fire spike explosion on turning slash hits | |
Core 3 | Additional offensive abyss core | |
Core 4 | Supplementary damage or utility | |
Helm | Headgear with synergistic stat bonus | |
Stat | Critical Rate III | Maximizes critical hit chance for burst damage |
Element | Fire Imbue | Enables fire turning slash combos |
Fire imbue is critical because it adds elemental damage that stacks with both the initial turning slash and the Greysoul Howling afterimage. Combined with Ground Surge's fire spikes, the full combo delivers three or more sources of damage per turning slash.
Greysoul Howling is most effective with one-handed swords, since turning slash is a core part of the sword moveset.
The afterimage benefits from weapon refinement. Refining your sword further increases the damage of both the base slash and the shadow follow-up.
Pair with Ground Surge for the strongest turning slash build currently known.
Fire imbue turning slash with both Greysoul Howling and Ground Surge equipped creates one of the highest single-attack damage combos in the game.
Available after Chapter 9; prioritize getting this core as soon as it becomes available.
