Charting the Unknown
October 28, 2026 at 10:44 PM
Add confirmed expansion unlock requirements and platform preload rules.
Charting the Unknown, sold in full as Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown, is the first paid expansion for Crimson Desert. Pearl Abyss opened pre-orders on September 3, 2026 and originally set release for October 15, 2026 at $24.99 (USD). On September 30, 2026 the studio moved the release back two weeks to October 29, 2026, saying it needed additional development time to deliver a more polished and stable experience. It sits on top of the free Crimson Desert Enhanced update that every owner already received with version 2.00.00, and it is the first content in the game that has to be bought separately.

The expansion unlocks worldwide at a single moment. The rows below are that same instant read on three local clocks, which is why Pearl Abyss's Korean announcements give October 30 as the release day while the English pages say October 29. These times replace the original October 15 schedule, which the studio withdrew on September 30, 2026.
Region | Unlock Time |
|---|---|
Europe | October 29, 2026 at 22:00 UTC, which is 23:00 CET the same day |
North America | October 29, 2026 at 15:00 PT, which is 18:00 ET |
Asia | October 30, 2026 at 07:00 KST and JST |
The expansion adds ocean exploration, new character stories, property management and deeper social relationships. The October 20 feature overview confirmed the access conditions below, including different requirements for the character stories and the separate ocean story.
New enemies appear across both land and sea, and the studio describes them as demanding a change of tactics rather than more of the same. See Bosses for the roster shipped so far.
The expansion extends the map past Pywel's shores. Players take command of a ship and sail out to new islands off the coast, then dive beneath the surface to find underwater treasures, sunken ruins, and hidden mysteries. This is the largest single structural addition announced: the base game's water content is limited to swimming and fishing, with no player-controlled vessel.
Three economic and social additions were named: renting and managing a variety of facilities as a source of income, an upgraded Housing mode for building a home of the player's own, and expanded conversation with the people of Pywel to build deeper bonds. Facility rental is a new income channel alongside the existing dispatch missions and wagon trading.
Four new story threads were described: an ominous presence in the desert, a dangerous political conflict, a journey beyond time, and an ancient secret beneath the waves. All three playable characters continue their own arcs through them, following Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane.
Content | Confirmed requirement or access |
|---|---|
Kliff, Oongka and Damiane stories | Complete the main story, then open the Journal. |
Ocean exploration story | Complete the main-story quest "Howling Hill". This is separate from the three character stories. |
Diving | Available to all three characters without a special prerequisite. Diving consumes breath; equipment and items can extend it. |
Ship ownership | Begin the ship questline after establishing the Howling Hill camp. Build through port shipbuilding dispatch or buy through a Fleet Office. |
Regular and upgraded housing | Establish the Howling Hill camp and complete Luke's Request under the "Grounds of the Sunrise" Greymanes Faction quest. |
Castle ownership | Complete the main story and related quests, liberate the relevant stronghold, then complete its claim missions. Three specific castles are announced. |
Businesses | Establish the Greymane Camp and complete the faction quest required to liberate the relevant region. Access the business through the world map. |
Garden of Trials | Complete the main story to face previously encountered bosses consecutively. |
Announced businesses include a restaurant in Vellua and a smithy at Zargan Tankworks. Owned castles allow interior and courtyard decoration. The feature overview does not name the three eligible castles or provide a business profit formula.
Romance and marriage are announced for all three playable characters through building trust with NPCs. Friends can visit the camp after a required camp upgrade, but the overview does not give an exact upgrade level. These expansion features should be distinguished from the base game's earlier relationship systems.
PS5 pre-download opens 24 hours before the expansion unlock. Other platforms download the expansion when it unlocks. A concurrent base-game patch must be installed before launching the expansion. The October 28 release notice does not give that patch a version number; install the available update rather than assuming that an older Enhanced build is sufficient.
Pre-ordering grants Charter's Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka, and Charter's Light Diving Set for Damiane.
Item | Characters |
|---|---|
Charter's Diving Set | Kliff and Oongka |
Charter's Light Diving Set | Damiane |
Pearl Abyss has not stated whether the diving sets carry a stat line or are cosmetic only, and has not said whether they will be sold separately after release. Bonus items on this game are redeemed through the in-game Add-ons menu; see Pre-Order and Edition Content for the redemption path used by earlier bonuses.

Pre-orders opened in two waves on September 3, 2026: the PlayStation Store first at 15:00 UTC, then Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store at 21:00 UTC. The expansion was announced the same day during a State of Play showcase, with a new trailer. See Platform Comparison for how the base game runs on each system.
Following a review of content and age rating requirements, Charting the Unknown will not be sold in certain markets and regions, and pre-orders placed there have been closed. Depending on the storefront, refunds are processed automatically or must be requested through that platform's standard refund process. The affected markets and regions are not named on any first-party surface as of October 15, 2026, so this page does not list any. The expansion's listing carries an ESRB Rating Pending badge while the base game is rated ESRB Mature.
Korean release material prices the expansion at 27,800 won and states that existing owners on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and only those two platforms, receive a 10% discount. No English first-party surface mentions an owner discount as of September 16, 2026.
For the first five months after the March 19, 2026 launch, Pearl Abyss would only say that downloadable content was possible depending on how the game sold. At its second-quarter earnings briefing on August 12, 2026 the studio confirmed a paid DLC was in development for a 2026 release, with pricing, content and timing to follow in the third quarter. Those details arrived on September 3, 2026 with the pre-order announcement. Free patches have continued in parallel rather than being replaced; see Patch Notes and Post-Launch Content.
