Overview
Feng Ji (冯骥) is the CEO and co-founder of Game Science, the Chinese studio behind the Black Myth series. He is the primary creative force behind both Black Myth: Wukong and Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
Background
Born in the 1980s, Feng Ji attended Huazhong University of Science and Technology, where he majored in biology and worked at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Biophysics Institute. He abandoned plans for graduate school after becoming addicted to World of Warcraft when it launched in China around 2004-2005.

By 2007, Feng Ji had built a reputation in the Chinese gaming community through a critical 10,000-word essay titled "Who Killed Our Games" (谁杀死了我们的游戏), expressing frustration with the Chinese gaming industry's state. This piece established him as a voice for change.
Tencent years (2008-2014)
Feng Ji joined Tencent in 2008 and was assigned to Quantum Studio. Starting in 2009, he led development of Asura Online. A Monkey King-based MMO that aimed to "create an epic game rooted in Eastern culture that could surpass World of Warcraft." He departed due to disagreements over monetization versus player experience. When Tencent restructured its studios in 2014, merging Quantum with Light Speed Studio to form the Photon Studio Group, Feng Ji and Yang Qi chose to leave and founded Game Science on June 13, 2014.
On the decision to make Zhong Kui
After Wukong shipped, Feng Ji described feeling "confusion, emptiness, and fear." He was "superficially working on the DLC while deeply longing for a breakthrough." A conversation with Yang Qi about a dream of Zhong Kui changed direction for the studio.

He quoted Nintendo's Satoru Iwata: "There is no future on the existing extension line." His own words: "We want to free our hands, experiment boldly, break from fixed formulas, and start from scratch." He has said he plans to return to Wukong eventually, approaching it "in a more complete and polished form" after the creative reset.
On the franchise
Feng Ji planned the broader Black Myth series from the beginning: "When we considered making Black Myth: Wukong, we hoped that Black Myth could encompass various Chinese myths and legends. That's why we registered characters like Xiaoqian, Zhong Kui, and Yang Jian early on. Some characters may not be as famous as Sun Wukong, but this actually gives us more room for re-creation."
Key quotes on Zhong Kui
"A DLC would certainly be a good option, but at this moment, what we really want is to create a brand-new Black Myth game."
Described Zhong Kui's development status at Gamescom as "little more than an empty folder."
Said he has "absolutely no idea" when the game will be ready.
"There is surprise in the unknown; there is fun in challenges."
Called the Chinese New Year 2026 video "a Zhong Kui experiment on the tip of the tongue."
