Jinyiwei
The Jinyiwei (锦衣卫, literally "Brocade-Clad Guard" or "Embroidered Uniform Guard") are the central faction in A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei. In the game and in history, they functioned as the Ming Dynasty's imperial secret police. A powerful intelligence and enforcement arm that answered directly to the emperor.
Historical basis
The Jinyiwei were established in 1382 by the Hongwu Emperor (Zhu Yuanzhang), the founder of the Ming Dynasty. Originally a palace guard unit of roughly 500 men, they expanded rapidly. Reaching 14,000 within three years and eventually swelling to approximately 200,000 under the Zhengde Emperor. They operated outside the normal judicial system and answered only to the emperor.

Their powers included surveillance of officials, investigation of treason, arrest without warrant, and interrogation in their own prisons. The Northern Depot prison (诏狱, Zhao Yu) was notorious for its documented "eighteen tortures" used to extract confessions. Chinese officials nicknamed them "Imperial eagles and military dogs" (朝廷鹰犬). Agents disguised themselves as merchants, servants, or ordinary travelers to gather intelligence across the empire.
Internal divisions
The Jinyiwei were divided into two primary branches, both of which play central roles in the game. See: Northern and Southern Commanderies.
Northern Commandery (北镇抚司) Handled secret surveillance, counter-espionage, political prisoners, and the imperial prisons. The protagonist's cover faction.
Southern Commandery (南镇抚司) Managed military criminal investigation, discipline of garrison personnel, and weapons development. A rival faction in the game.
The Eastern Depot
The Eastern Depot (东厂, Dong Chang) was a parallel spy agency created in 1420 by the Yongle Emperor, staffed entirely by eunuchs. It was responsible for spying on officials of any rank. The Eastern Depot could investigate and arrest suspects but had no prisons of its own. Prisoners were handed over to the Jinyiwei's Northern Depot for interrogation. Over time, the Eastern Depot grew to rival and eventually dominate the Jinyiwei, particularly under the powerful eunuch Wei Zhongxian. The game's late Ming setting places it during this period of tension between the agencies.

Uniforms and rank
The historical Jinyiwei wore distinctive Feiyu clothing (飞鱼服, "flying fish suits") with decorative patterns including dragon scales and bullfighting symbols that signified rank. The game uses a military hierarchy, with ranks like Thousand-Man Commander (千户, Qianhu), held by characters like Deng Yang.
In-game depiction
The protagonist infiltrates the Northern Commandery as an undercover operative. The Jinyiwei are not depicted as straightforward villains or heroes. Individual members have their own motivations and allegiances. The Deng Yang demo mission involves a pursuit where the Northern and Southern Commanderies compete to capture a renegade officer, illustrating the internal rivalries within the organization.
