Skills and Progression
September 15, 2026 at 08:09 AM
Initial version (2026-09-15)
Skills in Zeverland level independently through use. The studio described the design on 2025-11-16: early on each skill rises on its own as you do the thing it covers, and later each skill line develops its own upgrade path rather than feeding one shared character level. The first pre-alpha tech test shipped what the studio called an early-stage skill system, and the system was rebuilt after that test with a stated goal of making a beginner and a veteran feel meaningfully different from each other. Both tests were wiped, so no level, cap or experience figure from either build survives.
No stat table, skill list or per-point value has ever been published. Four names are confirmed, each from a specific answer.
Name | What is confirmed |
|---|---|
Charisma | Raises the cap on how many survivors you can recruit. Confirmed 2026-06-29. See NPC Companions. |
Strength | A named stat whose experience cap is a deliberate design number. The studio listed the cap under working as intended rather than treating it as a bug. |
Gains experience from boss fights by design, which produced visible level jumps during the second test. See Combat. | |
Metalworking | A named skill and quest line, attached to crafting a homemade object. See Crafting and Modification. |
A training screen exists for self-improvement, and singing is one of the activities on it. Its existence is confirmed through a second-test bug: the training screen froze, and the studio listed it as under investigation on its daily issue board. Nothing else about what training costs or produces has been published. The build is covered on Second Pre-Alpha Tech Test.
Both tests produced complaints about the pace of progression, and the studio agreed with all of them.
Complaint | Test | What the studio said |
|---|---|---|
A crossbow arrow cost one plank each, and levelling through arrow crafting was a grind | First | Recipe optimisation promised |
Tiny materials could only be crafted from the backpack | Second | Efficiency work promised |
Crops had to be watered one at a time | Second | Efficiency work promised. See Farming and Fishing. |
Hunger, thirst and stamina drained too fast | First | Lower base consumption as characters progress. See Survival Needs. |
The opening boss effectively required a team | First | A weaker version promised, plus clearer guidance pointing players toward mining |
Item | Status |
|---|---|
Farming and ranching skill lines | Announced 2026-06-30. Each is to get its own skill system. |
Weapon skill effects | Announced 2025-11-17. Weapon skill levels are to shape draw speed, accuracy, melee speed and durability. The studio said it completely agreed and that the system was being rebuilt. |
Charisma experience for helping survivors when your party is full | Announced 2026-06-30. |
All three are announcements rather than played features. The weapon-skill line is the oldest of them, made in November 2025 and not reported as finished in any post since, which is a reminder that a rebuilt system takes longer than a promise. Weapon behaviour itself is covered on Weapon Assembly.
