Thresher
September 11, 2026 at 10:12 PM
Initial version (2026-09-11)
The Thresher is the Grell siege creature, a Tier 2.5 unit that takes root in the ground and throws Void Bombs 27 range downfield for 120 damage with full splash. It is the longest ranged thing the faction owns by a very large margin, and while it is rooted it also spreads the biomass mat the rest of the faction depends on.
Figures below describe the September 2026 Early Access build, the one carrying the identifier ZS.c36778, and they move with the weekly patch cadence. Roughly half the versus roster had a stat touched in the fortnight before that build was captured, so treat every number here as dated rather than permanent.

Take Root | Siege mode. A rooted Thresher gains its long range area attack and spreads biomass over a 3.75 radius. A rooted Thresher cannot move. | 1.25 seconds to root or unroot, halved by Anchoring Tendrils | None |
Biomass Spread | Passive. Spreads biomass in a 3.75 radius. | Always active | None |
Upgrade | Tier | Cost | Effect | Researched at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Corroding Expulsion | 1 | 100 flux, 50 seconds | Attacks create a pool of poison on the ground that lasts 6 seconds | Synapse Canopy |
Anchoring Tendrils | 1 | 100 flux, 50 seconds | Rooting and uprooting is 50% faster, and +30% movement speed | Synapse Canopy |
Infuse is the Grell conversion mechanic, paid out of the same top bar power pool as the Legion Reanimate and the Xol Replicate. It permanently raises a friendly unit's health, damage and regeneration for the rest of that unit's life. Since the balance pass of August 11, 2026 the bonus is +45%, down from +50%, and the cost multiplier rose from 0.045 to 0.05 so that it matches the Protectorate shield and the Legion Reanimate.
The Thresher is eligible for all three conversions at an identical 15.9375 power each, one of the most expensive prices in the faction. That reflects six supply and 175 flux of investment rather than the unit's durability.
Range 27 against a roster where most units shoot at 5 to 12 is the whole argument for the Thresher. A rooted line of them removes static defences and production structures from outside anything that can answer, and the +75% bonus against Building armour raises each 120 damage bomb to 210 against a structure. Full splash across 2.5 range means a clustered defence takes that figure across the whole group rather than a reduced edge value, which is a change from the older behaviour where the splash fell off.
The cost is mobility. Move speed 450 is the second slowest in the faction, a Thresher has no attack at all while unrooted, and rooting takes 1.25 seconds each way. Anchoring Tendrils is the upgrade that makes the unit playable rather than positional, halving that transition and adding 30 percent movement, and it is usually taken first. Corroding Expulsion adds a lingering poison pool, which matters most against an opponent forced to advance into the bombardment.
The biomass spread is not incidental. A Thresher rooted at a forward position is extending the mat that Seedlings need to build on, so sieging and expanding are the same action for this faction in a way they are not for the other three.
Threshers come from the Incubator with both their upgrades at the Synapse Canopy. At 175 flux they are the second most flux hungry unit in the Grell roster after the Behemoth, which makes a Thresher opening a commitment to holding flux deposits, and the trade off is described in Resources and Economy.
The unit sits alongside the Gatherer as one of only two units in the faction that provide biomass, both at 375. That gives the Thresher a role in the Grell territory game that no other combat unit has.
The Thresher carries Heavy armour with an armour value of 1. Heavy is the tough category, but 350 health at six supply is not a lot for the price, and the armour value of 1 only takes one damage off each incoming hit. A Thresher is not meant to be shot at, and the faction expects Keepers, Mandragoras or Reavers to be standing in front of it.
Its own bonus is +75% against Building armour, the only structure bonus in the Grell roster apart from the Boomer. Against Light, Medium, Heavy, Hero and None the Void Bomb does its flat 120 with full splash, which is still the largest single hit the faction produces at range.
Target | Why |
|---|---|
Buildings and static defences | +75% against Building armour turns a 120 damage bomb into 210, with full splash across 2.5 range. |
Clustered armies | 100 percent splash over 2.5 range applies the full figure to every unit in the radius. |
Anything that has to approach | Range 27 against a roster that mostly shoots between 5 and 12. |
Threat | Why |
|---|---|
Fast units that reach it | 450 move speed, no attack while unrooted, and 1.25 seconds to change state. |
Air units | Void Bomb targets ground only, so a Thresher cannot defend itself against a flyer at all. |
Being flanked while rooted | A rooted Thresher cannot move and must be unrooted before it can retreat. |
August 28, 2026: health increased from 300 to 350.
August 28, 2026: weapon splash now deals 100 percent damage to every unit in the area, replacing the previous 85 percent falloff.
The roster record for this unit is COMPLETE.
The Thresher is one of two Grell units that provide biomass, the other being the Gatherer, and both provide 375.
Per unit numbers are drawn from a community maintained entity catalogue that the studio links from each of its own faction pages. It is the only place the full stat block is published, and it is not a studio document, so the figures are best read as careful community documentation of a build rather than as an official specification. Dated balance notes, by contrast, come straight from the studio patch posts.
