The Thomas Richards' Journal is the captain's-log entry from Captain Thomas Richards recording how Israel Hands came aboard with wine and game, lulled him to sleep, and stole the artifact. Richards expects to be hanged by Blackbeard if he can't recover it.

The journal is a readable lore note rather than a usable tool. It fills out the rivalry behind the Foothills raids: Thomas Richards served under Blackbeard's crew and lost a prized relic to Israel Hands, Blackbeard's real lieutenant, who tricked him with gifts of wine and game before slipping away. The entry explains why a squad was dispatched to the Foothills and sets up the hunt the player joins.

Bloody hell. The moment I held the artifact, Hands appeared.

May vultures pick his bones.

He came on a friendly visit, brought a few bottles of fine wine and fresh game, and lulled me into lowering my guard. By morning, the artifact was gone, and so was Hands.

Blackbeard himself will hang me from the yardarm if I don't deliver that cursed relic.

We'll send a squad to the Foothills. Quietly.

And damn me, the game really was excellent.
