Seedbed Placement covers the rules for building Seedbeds in Windrose. The Seedbed is the only dedicated farming structure and the backbone of the Farming System. Each Seedbed holds four crops and costs 5 Fertile Soil to construct.
Property | Value |
|---|---|
Cost | 5 Fertile Soil per Seedbed |
Planting slots | 4 slots (one at each corner of the Seedbed) |
Station type | Dedicated farming structure; placed from the farming tab of the base build menu |
Gather at least 5 Fertile Soil with a pickaxe from the dirt mounds at Ancient Farm ruins in the Foothills.
Open the build menu and select the Seedbed from the farming tab.
Aim at a patch of flat, open ground; a green placement ghost means the spot is valid.
Confirm placement to spend the 5 Fertile Soil and drop the structure.
Plant one seed at each of the four corner slots to fill the bed.
Flat, exposed terrain. Seedbeds must be placed on flat ground that is not clipping into other structures or terrain features.
Above ground level. If a Seedbed is buried in sand, clipped into a rock, or partially underground, slot count is reduced or planting is blocked entirely. Placing Seedbeds slightly above ground level (on a plinth or foundation) avoids this entirely.
Water / sunlight / soil maintenance. None required. A Seedbed on flat ground grows crops regardless of proximity to water, shelter, or time of day.
If a placed Seedbed shows fewer than four usable slots, or refuses a seed, the cause is almost always the surface underneath it. Use the table below to diagnose the issue.
Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Fewer than 4 slots | A corner is clipped into sand, rock, or a slope | Move the bed to flatter ground or raise it onto a foundation |
Cannot plant at all | Bed is partially underground | Place on a plinth so the whole bed sits above ground level |
Placement ghost stays red | Overlap with another structure or terrain feature | Reposition until the ghost turns green before confirming |
Each Seedbed offers four planting slots positioned at the corners. Plant one seed per corner. All four slots share the same global growth timer of roughly 70 minutes, which means planting the four seeds simultaneously and harvesting them simultaneously is the most efficient use of the structure.
There are no documented adjacency rules between Seedbeds (no bonus or penalty from clustering). Placing Seedbeds side-by-side is fine for base-building aesthetics, but it neither speeds growth nor increases yield.
Because each bed holds four plants, a farm dedicated to fiber is easy to size. Common community guidance is to keep 15 to 20 Flax slots running, which works out to four or five beds. The table below shows the Fertile Soil budget for a few farm sizes.
Seedbeds | Total Slots | Fertile Soil Needed |
|---|---|---|
4 beds | 16 slots | 20 Fertile Soil |
6 beds | 24 slots | 30 Fertile Soil |
10 beds | 40 slots | 50 Fertile Soil |
Three plants (Shrub, Ficus, Palm) do not require a Seedbed. These Ground Plants are placed directly on the terrain anywhere on the plot. They do not consume Fertile Soil and do not respect the four-slot-per-Seedbed limit, so they are a free way to green up a base without spending mined soil.
Fertile Soil is mined with a pickaxe from small raised dirt mounds at Ancient Farm ruins in the Foothills biome. A secondary source exists at ruins in the Cursed Swamps. Access to the Foothills is gated behind defeating the Coastal Jungle boss; plan on gathering 30 or more Fertile Soil on the first Foothills trip to avoid repeat runs.
