Initial article documenting the Dodo, a passive Coastal Jungle bird that drops Bird Meat and Dodo Eggs.
Dodos are passive flightless birds in Windrose's Coastal Jungle biome, especially common on beaches. They do not attack the player and flee when approached. Dodos drop Bird Meat and Dodo Eggs, both essential cooking ingredients for early-game stat foods. Hunting Dodos is one of the safest early-game ways to stockpile food materials before tackling more dangerous wildlife like Boars.
Dodos spawn primarily on:
Coastal Jungle beaches (most common; the starting island has multiple spawn points)
Open clearings within Coastal Jungle islands
Sometimes near abandoned camps or ruins, where they nest among the rubble
Dodos are not present in the Foothills or Cursed Swamps biomes. They are an early-game resource that becomes less relevant once the player advances to higher-tier biomes with their own bird-equivalent enemies.
Approach slowly; if a Dodo runs, you may need to chase it briefly
Use a bow or pistol for ranged kills; a single shot is usually enough
Look for Dodo Egg nests in the same area; eggs can be picked up directly without combat
Stockpile Bird Meat and Dodo Eggs in chests at your base; they are key ingredients for the most powerful early-game cooking buffs
The historical Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a flightless bird native to Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, not the Caribbean. It went extinct around 1681 due to hunting and introduced predators. Windrose's alternate-history Caribbean repurposes the Dodo as a Caribbean species, both for its iconic recognizability and for the pirate-era "easy hunt" connotation. The choice positions the Coastal Jungle biome as a place where unspoiled wildlife still thrives, untouched by the supernatural corruption spreading from elsewhere.
