Character Building

Noted trait material items are bought from the WoAng vendor with Otherworld Coins
Character building is the RPG growth layer of VOID DIVER: Escape from the Abyss. Each playable Diver is shaped through skill trees, traits, and gear, and the choices a player makes determine how that operative performs in Combat and how they hold up across a run. Building a character happens before the dive, so the loadout a player commits to is part of preparing for the dangers of The Abyss.
Every Diver has exclusive skill trees that are tied to that specific character. These trees are how a Diver's potential is developed, and they let players lean into the strengths of whichever operative they are taking into the dungeon. Critically, players enter the dungeon with a chosen skill-tree combination, so the build is locked in as part of pre-dive setup rather than swapped freely mid-run.
Trait materials are not only found in the dungeon. A demo vendor named WoAng sells trait material items in exchange for Otherworld Coins, the in-dungeon currency, giving players a way to buy toward the traits they want, although the cost is high. See BALUSHA Antique Shop for the vendors and currency tied to the shop hub.
Alongside skill trees, characters have traits that further specialize them. The number of traits a player can activate is not unlimited: a character's proficiency determines how many traits can be activated at once. This makes proficiency a meaningful axis of growth, since a more proficient character can field more of their traits and therefore a more developed build.
The third piece of a build is gear. Gear customization lets players construct a character using countless weapons, accessories, and relics obtained from the dungeons. This ties character building directly to the loot loop: the Weapons and Gear and Artifacts and Relics recovered on a run become the raw material for stronger builds on future runs.
A complete build draws on all three systems working in concert.
Skill trees define a character's core abilities, chosen as a combination before the dive.
Traits add specialization, capped by the character's proficiency.
Gear rounds out the build with weapons, accessories, and relics pulled from the dungeon.
Because each Diver has a distinct combat style, the same systems produce very different results depending on who is being built, reinforcing the value of the broader roster. This long-term growth across runs is what carries a player from early expeditions to deeper, more dangerous dives.
