The Space Marines are one of four confirmed playable factions in Total War: Warhammer 40,000. They are the iconic warriors of the Imperium: genetically enhanced super-soldiers in sacred power armour, wielding the Imperium's most deadly weaponry. They have long been synonymous with the Warhammer 40,000 hobby, and in this game they translate that legendary status into a distinct strategic identity built around elite, low-count forces.
Playstyle
The Space Marines are described by Creative Assembly as few in number but immensely powerful. Where other factions rely on large rosters or massed formations, the Space Marines field smaller armies of exceptional warriors. Each Astartes can absorb and deal far more punishment than a comparable soldier of any other faction, with bolters, plasma weaponry, and chainswords as standard. This creates a quality-over-quantity dynamic in which positioning, target priority, and the careful deployment of each unit matter more than overwhelming the enemy with sheer numbers.
This approach contrasts sharply with the Astra Militarum, who compensate with mass, and the Orks, who swamp opponents with brutality and numbers. For players who prefer precision and resilience over attrition, the Space Marines offer a focused, unforgiving experience in which each casualty represents a significant loss.
Custom Force Commander
Rather than playing as a specific Primarch demigod such as Roboute Guilliman, Space Marine players take command of a custom Force Commander. The developer roundtable confirmed that players design their commander's chapter colours, heraldry, name, traits, and wargear loadout. This makes the Space Marines the most customisation-forward faction at launch and lets players field essentially a custom chapter rather than being locked into the Ultramarines or another specific founding chapter.
Why No Primarchs
Creative Assembly has indicated that the Primarchs themselves are not playable as legendary lords. The Primarchs are demigod-tier characters within the setting, and the development team has framed them as too powerful for the role legendary lords serve in a Total War campaign. The custom Force Commander stands in as the player's avatar and chapter-master figure instead.
Battle Objectives
Some Space Marine battles feature directed objectives drawn from setting tropes. One example described by the design team is rescuing trapped Astra Militarum survivors during a battle, leaning into the lore-typical role of Space Marines arriving to extract Imperial defenders from an otherwise hopeless situation.
Sub-Factions and Warlords
Renowned sub-factions and warlords are referenced as part of the faction system, but no specific Space Marine chapter or named character has been confirmed publicly. The June 2026 PC Gaming Show reveal focused its gameplay footage on the Astra Militarum and Orks rather than the Space Marines, so a named chapter roster is still to come. Multiple Space Marine chapters in different colour schemes appear in the announce trailer, which suggests the system supports chapters beyond the Ultramarines that lead the visual identity. Details are expected to arrive in the marketing campaign throughout 2026.
Army Customisation
Like all factions, the Space Marines support the deep army customisation system. Players can personalise colours, iconography, wargear, names, traits, and tactical abilities, allowing the creation of custom chapters in all but name within the visual and thematic identity of the Adeptus Astartes.
