The campaign in Total War: Warhammer 40,000 operates at a galactic scale, encompassing multiple star systems each containing several planets. Players expand their control turn by turn, capturing regions on individual planets while moving fleets between worlds through zones of concentrated conflict called Crusade Theaters. The campaign was detailed in the Show and Tell stream held around the end of April 2026, which covered the campaign map, planet types, biomes, and battle environments.

The campaign map represents a galaxy fractured by the Great Rift, the catastrophic tear through reality that defines the Era Indomitus. Star systems are the primary strategic units on this map, and each system contains multiple planets. Players do not conquer a star system in a single action; instead, they must work through each planet within it, capturing regions and securing the world before moving on.
Fleets move between planets through Crusade Theaters: zones of concentrated conflict that define the strategic corridors of the campaign. Crusade Theaters are the pathways through which the war spreads, determining where forces can project power and which planets are currently in contention. The exact mechanics of fleet movement and Crusade Theater management have not been fully detailed in pre-release materials.
Planets vary considerably in character, ranging from sparsely settled frontier worlds to dense hive worlds with massive populations and industrial infrastructure. Each planet type has distinct civilisations and presumably distinct strategic value, though specific mechanics tied to world type have not been fully confirmed.
Four planet biomes have been confirmed, each influencing the visual character of battles fought on those worlds and presumably their strategic properties.
Biome | Description |
|---|---|
Arid | Dry, barren planets with exposed terrain and minimal vegetation. |
Temperate | Mixed climate worlds with varied terrain including forests and settlements. |
Ice | Frozen worlds with glacial landscapes and extreme cold environments. |
Waste | Devastated or toxic planets scarred by war, pollution, or catastrophe. |
The game offers full campaigns as well as shorter campaign options for players who want a more contained experience. Single decisive battles are also available as a standalone mode for players who want to engage only in the real-time battle layer without a campaign context. Single-player, online player-versus-player, and co-op campaign modes are all confirmed.
