Puzzles and Traps

Puzzles are the pillar the development team talks about first. The game director has called them the core of the game, and the design director frames them as central to the series across its whole history. For Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis the team reworked many of the original's puzzles so that players reason through a solution rather than simply operate a switch.
Official material lists four mechanics by name.

The team draws a distinction between two kinds. Some are cerebral and depend on grasping a rule. Others are exploration-led, where the work is finding the pieces needed for a solution, or getting to the vantage point from which the answer becomes visible.
Three puzzles in Peru have been described.

The team deliberately avoids signposting. Puzzle objects are given an implied function that invites investigation rather than an obvious interaction prompt, with subtle cues appearing only as Lara gets close. The experience director's stated goal is to preserve curiosity without leaving players lost.
Support is available for players who want it. Lara's narration offers gentle nudges, and a scanner hint system can point toward the next step. Those scanner hints are entirely optional, and puzzle difficulty can be tuned separately from combat difficulty.
Iteration counts have been made public. A puzzle that works from the start typically goes through six to eight revisions; harder ones need ten to twelve, usually including a couple of complete overhauls. The stated aim is a puzzle that is challenging without ever letting players get stuck, and that leaves them feeling clever once solved.
Rolling boulder traps are confirmed as a returning hazard. Official copy describes the wider category as deadly contraptions, and the store description frames every solution as combining knowledge the player has uncovered with clever thinking.
The full trap roster, the number of optional tombs or challenges, and the reward structure attached to them have not been published.
