Initial version (2026-08-07): confirmed creature roster for Peru, the reworked Tyrannosaurus rex encounter, and Focus Mode
Combat in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has been rebuilt from scratch, and so has the roster that Lara Croft faces. Official material groups her opposition into three broad classes: savage wildlife, human mercenaries, and mythological creatures. Only the wildlife of Peru has been detailed so far.
The design brief was authenticity over fighting-game systems. The experience director has said the team wanted encounters to feel less like trading moves and more like surviving against living, unpredictable predators, and the animals have been given dens, water sources and scattered bones so they read as long-term residents rather than spawned obstacles.
Five creatures return in the opening region, each redesigned and each teaching a different combat lesson. The wolf, bear and bat were modelled on prehistoric animals from the Andes.
Creature | Role in combat | What has been confirmed |
|---|---|---|
Wolves | First real threat | They move constantly, so Focus Mode is the practical way to take them down quickly. The collapsing bridge ambush from the original returns in reimagined form. |
Bats | Ranged-combat tutorial | Described as moving, squishy targets, deliberately placed to get players comfortable shooting in third person before the serious threats arrive. They fill the caverns of Peru. |
Bears | Movement test | Cannot be traded with. Players are expected to break away using short acrobatic chains, then use Focus Mode for a headshot on the charging animal. |
Velociraptors | Pack predator | Effective alone and in packs. Their attacks telegraph so they can be dodged, but a leaping attack can pin Lara. They are feathered, and damage decals knock feathers loose during a fight. |
Tyrannosaurus rex | Set-piece encounter | The climax the whole Peru region builds toward. Shooting alone will not work; Lara has to outwit it. Redesigned with red feathers. |
The T-Rex encounter has been reworked more than anything else in the region. The team began with an arena fight in the shape of the original, then abandoned it once the idea of a chase took hold. The game director describes the result as blockbuster and spectacle-driven, a cinematic set piece rather than a conventional boss arena, with the animal maintaining a presence across the whole level rather than appearing only at the end.
The art director has framed the redesign as respectful of the original silhouette with the red feathers as the new element, and the combat as an expansion of what was previously a simple shoot-and-run exchange.
Focus Mode is the system that ties these encounters together. Dealing and taking damage fill a meter; spending it drops the game into bullet time, letting Lara perform an acrobatic flip while continuing to fire. The game director calls it the currency of combat, and the mechanism that makes her classic acrobatics viable rather than a liability, since a slow evasive move would otherwise leave her exposed. She fights with her dual pistols alongside other unlockable weapons.
The wildlife of Greece, Egypt and the Mediterranean island has not been shown. Neither has the mercenary faction, its motivation, or its relationship to the Scion. The phrase "mythological creatures" appears in official copy without any named example. The full unlockable weapon roster is also unpublished.
The 1996 original's enemy roster is not a guide to this one. Combat was rebuilt from the ground up, and the studios have named only the creatures above as confirmed returns.
