Bashu

Initial version (2026-09-12)
Bashu (巴蜀) is the region where Tianji: Shadow of the Ancients takes place, and it is the only place name the game has published. Every other location shown so far, including the ancient underground city that the story turns on, is still unnamed as of 12 September 2026.
The game is set in the Tianbao era of the Tang Dynasty, with unrest stirring in Bashu. The Tianji Guard is sent into the region to investigate a millennium-old ruin, and the Xuanxin Order rises there in the months after that expedition fails. Shangguan Shuo travels through the landscapes of Bashu and a mysterious millennium-old underground city, and Justdan's own description says he witnesses that city awaken.
The Tang setting is borrowed rather than documentary. Only what this game asserts about Bashu is in scope here; the region and the era exist outside it, but nothing about the real place should be read into the world the game builds.
Justdan describes hand-drawn 2D artwork using traditional landscape-painting brushwork, with folk clothing, ancient architecture and local ecology rendered in detail. Cutscenes use a separate style again: a grey-wash hand-painted look distinct from the in-game art, seen in a screenshot showing three children, one of them cradling a glowing mask-like object.
The nineteen official screenshots give the clearest picture of the world that exists so far.
Scene | What it shows |
|---|---|
A Tang town | A canal and a bridge, with townspeople on the streets. Towns are where the day and night cycle is switched. |
A grotto | A cave interior with a quest tracker reading 「被引向山中的人」 and the objective 「探索石窟」, explore the grotto. This is the only quest name that exists anywhere. |
A swimming sequence | Water traversal in the open field. See Exploration. |
A night camp | A campsite beside a large glowing blue tree at night. |
The world map | A painted landscape map with shadowy enemy shapes roaming across it. |
The world is split between a world map layer and dungeons. Hands-on impressions of the September 2026 demo describe most of the exploration weight sitting on the world map, where enemies appear as drifting black mist whose contents are unknown until the fight starts and which is generally easier than what lives in dungeons. Dungeons in that build were largely linear, with enemies fully visible, placed sparsely and hard to avoid, functioning more like set obstacles than random encounters. Shortcuts existed and treasure chests were placed on the field. All of this is one account of one demo, not a published description of the finished game.
Place | What is known |
|---|---|
Bashu | The region the game is set in, in the Tianbao era. The only published place name. |
The millennium-old ruin | Where the Tianji Guard expedition went wrong. Unnamed. |

No town, dungeon, landmark or sub-region of Bashu has a published proper name as of 12 September 2026. No world map image has been released outside the screenshot set, no travel or fast-travel system has been described, and no enemy or creature seen in the region has been named, including the large winged creature with red and teal plumage that appears both in a cutscene and as a battle opponent.
