Towns in Tianji: Shadow of the Ancients can be switched between day and night at will. The published description states that events, obtainable items and NPC interactions all change with the time of day, and calls the difference dramatic. It is one of the few systems on this game that both independent hands-on accounts of the September 2026 preview build described, which makes it unusually well evidenced for a game this early.
What Changes
Layer | What the time of day affects | Standing |
|---|---|---|
Merchants | One hands-on account reports that merchants open only during the day, so trading is gated to daytime. | Single hands-on account |
NPCs present | Which NPCs are in a town changes with the hour. One account notes that fewer people walk the streets at night. | Both accounts agree that the NPC layer changes |
Side quests | Some side quests taken during the day cannot be completed until night, making the switch a required step rather than a convenience. | Single hands-on account |
Events and items | The published description states that events and obtainable items change with the time of day. | Developer statement |
Switching
The store description says the player can switch freely between day and night in towns. In the preview build, one account reports that this was done by sleeping at an inn. Whether that is the only method, whether time also passes on its own, and whether the switch is available outside towns have not been stated.
Night Outside Towns
Night scenes are not confined to the town layer in published material. One of the official screenshots shows a night scene in the field: a robed figure in an elaborate gold mask and headdress presiding over a glowing blue tree. Nothing published says whether that scene is a scripted story moment or a night state the player can reach through the cycle, so it is recorded here as a night scene that exists rather than as evidence about how the system works.
Why It Matters for Play
Because trading, quest completion and NPC availability all sit on the same switch, the time of day is something to plan around rather than a visual filter: business that can only be done by day has to be finished before a town is flipped over to night. See Exploration for the town layer it sits inside.
Not Yet Published
As of 12 September 2026, four days after the reveal, no in-game clock, no count of distinct time slots beyond day and night, no statement of whether time advances on its own, and no list of time-gated events or items had been published. Everything above the switching section rests on one demo build played at a single event.
