The chain weapon is Ciri's secondary weapon in The Witcher IV. It occupies the equipment slot that Geralt's crossbow held in The Witcher 3, providing ranged and mid-range combat options alongside her two swords.
The chain is a versatile tool with multiple uses in combat:
Grappling: Pull enemies closer for follow-up sword strikes
Restraining: Wrap around targets to restrict their movement
Igni infusion: Light the chain on fire using the Igni sign, adding burn damage on contact
Ranged attacks: Strike enemies at mid-range when closing the distance with swords would be risky
Ciri used the chain weapon during her fight against the Bauk in the Stromford cave. She imbued it with Igni to create a flaming whip-like weapon and used it to control the Bauk's movement within the confined cave space.
The chain weapon appears to reference the opening cinematic of the original Witcher game from 2007, where Geralt used a length of chain in his fight against a striga. That sequence, rendered in CGI by Platige Image, was one of the most memorable moments in the franchise. Giving Ciri a chain as a core weapon rather than a one-off cinematic prop turns that callback into a full gameplay mechanic.
Geralt's crossbow in The Witcher 3 was primarily used for underwater combat against drowners and for knocking flying enemies like griffins out of the air. It was a simple point-and-shoot tool. The chain weapon offers more mechanical depth, with multiple interaction types and the ability to combine it with sign magic.
