Gilles the Hog is the boss that closes Act 1 of a Tears of Metal campaign. He was also the final fight of the second open beta in 2025 and of the free demo released in October 2025, which covered the game's first Act. See Bosses and Enemies for the rest of the roster, including Iseult the Banshee and Harold the Dragon.
Beta Rework
The fight drew complaints during the second open beta. Paper Cult explained afterwards that a system added at the last minute scaled difficulty with the Threat bar, which turned Gilles into a bullet sponge with huge health and one-shot attacks. The studio called that system broken, said it would be fixed, and said it was reworking his behaviour and stats so the encounter would involve less running in circles and more direct clashes.
Early Access Changes
Post-launch patches have adjusted the fight. Since July 24, 2026 Gilles no longer ignores a player who has been attacking him for an extended period, and the same patch made the block-breaking attacks of all bosses parryable.
Planned Boss Rewards
In September 2026 Paper Cult said it is adding items as a reward choice after boss fights, and used Gilles as its example: players who reach and defeat him without losing any health should be rewarded for it. The change had not shipped as of September 23, 2026. See Update History.
