A Yaoguai Vanquisher is the role the player fills in Sword Sage: Awakening. It describes a disciple of the Yuangong Sect whose purpose is to hunt and destroy the Yaoguai, the supernatural creatures that plague Guannandao after the leaking of the celestial books. Pei Sanniang is introduced as a rookie vanquisher.
The Chinese text calls the role 捉妖人, literally a "monster catcher," and describes the player as a 猿公门捉妖志士, a monster-catching champion of the Yuangong Sect. "Yaoguai Vanquisher" is the English rendering of that role.
Sword Sage: Awakening has not released yet. It is listed as "Coming soon" with no confirmed date, so every detail below reflects pre-launch material and is subject to change before launch.
The vanquisher's job is to confront supernatural threats directly. The game describes the player embodying a Yaoguai Vanquisher who uses the secret technique "Evade Cyan, Strike Red" to combat the threats plaguing Guannandao. The role is explicitly that of a hunter of Yaoguai that have been affected by the power of the forbidden celestial books.
A vanquisher does not rely on a single approach. The role combines several methods into one fluid style:
Method | Role in the Hunt |
|---|---|
Traditional swordsmanship | Fluid sword techniques that blend softness with strength, the core of the vanquisher's offense. |
Prosthetic leg strikes | Heavy blows from an artificial leg (义腿), used seamlessly alongside sword work. |
Celestial artifacts | Mystical artifacts deployed against supernatural foes. |
Taoist spells | Taoist magic used to vanquish creatures empowered by the celestial books. |
Evade Cyan, Strike Red | The signature fused evade-and-counter technique. See Evade Cyan, Strike Red. |
Two of those tools are hardware. The prosthetic leg that delivers the heavy strikes is visible as an articulated mechanical limb in the published screenshots, and a case mounted on the shoulder acts as a portable forge for a blade that has been worn down or broken. Both are read most naturally as products of the machine-building the people of Guannandao turned to after the disasters began, which puts the sect's hunters at the meeting point of the game's two halves: old swordsmanship and new machinery.
The role is not only offensive. Preview builds gave the vanquisher instant escape items and abilities, held in check by cooldowns rather than by long animations, and rest points where a red panda serves tea to restore health and prepares consumables that grant temporary combat buffs.

The game frames the player as "a rookie Yaoguai Vanquisher," someone at the start of their path. As described in story, the vanquisher travels a "road-movie odyssey," confronting undocumented horrors and unraveling folkloric mysteries while growing more capable. The role is therefore both a combat identity and a narrative one: the player learns the craft of vanquishing as Pei Sanniang does.
The learning curve is built into the design rather than left to the player. There is a single difficulty setting, and a vanquisher who dies three times in the story is handed two talismans that loosen the demands of Evade Cyan, Strike Red: one drops the directional requirement from the counter, the other performs the evade and counter automatically. Both can be removed again, so a rookie is helped rather than carried.

The role uses swordsmanship, heavy leg attacks, celestial artifacts, Taoist spells, and the Evade Cyan, Strike Red technique.
