Yaoguai are the supernatural creatures that serve as the primary enemies of Sword Sage: Awakening. They are described as being affected by the power of the forbidden celestial books, and they plague the land of Guannandao. Hunting them is the purpose of a Yaoguai Vanquisher such as the protagonist, Pei Sanniang.
Sword Sage: Awakening has not released yet. It is listed as "Coming soon" with no confirmed date, so every detail below reflects pre-launch material and is subject to change before launch.
Origin
The Yaoguai are tied directly to the central catastrophe of the setting. A thousand years ago, the drunken Supreme White Gibbon Sage leaked the celestial books, and the power released by that act unleashed monstrous infestations on the world. The Yaoguai the player fights are creatures warped by that same power. In other words, they are not a separate threat from the disaster at the heart of the story; they are one of its direct results.
"Yaoguai" is a term from Chinese folklore for strange supernatural beings, and the game roots its monsters in that tradition. The story also speaks of "undocumented horrors" and "Zhiguai folkloric mysteries," suggesting the creatures the player meets are drawn from, or inspired by, classical tales of the uncanny.
Role in Gameplay
Yaoguai exist to be vanquished. The combat system is built around defeating them, and the vanquisher's toolkit of swordsmanship, heavy leg attacks, celestial artifacts, and Taoist spells is aimed squarely at this purpose. The signature technique Evade Cyan, Strike Red is the player's primary means of dealing with their attacks, turning an enemy's strike into an opening for a counter.
