The celestial books and the Supreme White Gibbon Sage sit at the origin of the entire setting of Sword Sage: Awakening. The leaking of these forbidden books is the catastrophe from which the rest of the story flows.
Sword Sage: Awakening has not released yet. It is listed as "Coming soon" with no confirmed date, so every detail below reflects pre-launch material and is subject to change before launch.
A millennium before the events of the game, the Supreme White Gibbon Sage, while drunk, leaked the forbidden celestial books. That act unleashed eternal calamities and monstrous infestations on the world. The game treats this as the foundational event of its history: the moment the balance broke and the long age of disaster began.
The books are described as forbidden, which frames the leaking as a transgression rather than an accident of nature. The burden that Pei Sanniang inherits is the thousand-year weight of that single mistake, carried down to her own time.
Later material turns this from a vague loss into a specific act. The Gibbon Sage was warden of White Cloud Grotto, and the celestial books were his charge: he had been set there to safeguard them. In a drunken frenzy he annotated them, then carved the annotated text into a cliff face, and that carving is what loosed a calamity of Yaoguai which has run for a thousand years. The Chinese heading over the passage reads 绝壁天书, the celestial books of the sheer cliff, which names the cliff itself as the thing the books became.
Two things follow from that wording. The sage was not a bystander who mislaid something he happened to be near; he was its appointed keeper, which makes the catastrophe a broken duty rather than an accident. And the books were never carried off. They were copied, glossed and set where anyone passing could read them, which is a different sort of failure and a much harder one to undo. White Cloud Grotto, written 白云洞, is the first place attached to this part of the story by name. Nothing published so far says whether it can be reached in play, so it stands as the Sage's post and nothing more.
Consequence | Detail |
|---|---|
Eternal calamities | Relentless natural disasters that the world has lived under ever since. |
Monstrous infestations | The rise of the Yaoguai, creatures warped by the power of the books. |
A people transformed | The inhabitants of Guannandao forged "mechanical wonders" to survive, blending myth with machinery. |
An inherited burden | Pei Sanniang and the Yuangong Sect carry the duty of confronting what the leaking unleashed. |
A cliff of scripture | The annotated books were carved into a cliff face, and that carving is where the calamity was loosed from. |
The Supreme White Gibbon Sage is named as the figure responsible for the leak. The detail that the sage was drunk at the time is part of the official framing, giving the catastrophe a note of tragic carelessness. Beyond this origin role, pre-launch material does not detail the sage's fate, motives, or any further appearances, and the wiki will not speculate about them.
In Chinese the sage is 白猿公, the "White Ape Duke," and the forbidden books are 天书, literally "heavenly writing." The name matters beyond translation: 猿公 is the same element that names the Yuangong Sect, so the order that hunts the consequences of the leak carries the name of the figure who caused it. The game was first announced under a Chinese title that made the connection explicit, 《猿公剑:白猿觉醒》 ("Yuangong Sword: White Ape Awakening"), before the developers dropped the subtitle. What the sage's relationship to the sect actually is has not been explained in pre-launch material, and this wiki will not guess at it.
The Chinese materials name all three of the page's subjects directly. The forbidden books are 天书, the celestial or heavenly books. The Sage is 白猿公, literally the White Ape Elder, and 猿公 is the same word that names the Yuangong Sect. The game was first announced under the longer title 《猿公剑:白猿觉醒》, "Yuangong Sword: White Ape Awakening", before the subtitle was dropped, so the Sage was in the title itself at reveal.
The studio has said where the ape comes from. It names the legend of the White Ape and the Maiden of Yue, recorded in the 《吴越春秋》, the Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, as the story its swordsmanship lineage grows out of, and it names the demon-subduing novel 《平妖传》 as a second influence on the world. Both are classical Chinese sources rather than in-game canon; the game borrows from them, and nothing in either should be read as confirming what the finished game will contain.
Almost every major element of the game traces back to this event. The Yaoguai exist because of the books. The Yuangong Sect trains vanquishers to deal with the books' fallout. The "mechanical wonders" of Guannandao were built in response to the disasters the books caused. Understanding the leaking of the celestial books is the key to understanding the world, which is explored further in Chinese myth and sci-fi setting.
