Switch 2 Editions
On February 17, 2026, Unknown Worlds Entertainment released Subnautica: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Subnautica: Below Zero Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Both titles feature significant performance upgrades over their original Switch versions, including 1440p/60fps in docked mode and 1080p/60fps in handheld mode, along with support for Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. Original Switch owners receive a free upgrade. Subnautica 2 itself has not been announced for Switch 2.
Performance specifications
Mode | Resolution | Frame Rate |
|---|---|---|
Docked | 1440p | 60 FPS |
Handheld | 1080p | 60 FPS |
Both modes maintain stable frame rates and enhanced responsiveness compared to the original Switch versions, which ran at lower resolutions with less consistent performance. The Switch 2's improved hardware enables a substantial visual and gameplay upgrade for both titles.
Joy-Con 2 mouse controls
The Switch 2 editions support Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, enabling faster, more responsive gameplay. This feature provides more precise movement and interaction during underwater exploration, addressing a common criticism of the original Switch ports where controller-based aiming felt imprecise for scanning and tool use.
Free upgrade
Owners of the original Nintendo Switch versions of Subnautica or Below Zero can download the Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack at no cost from the Nintendo eShop. The upgrade packs became available on February 17, 2026, the same day the Switch 2 editions launched. The original Switch version must be downloaded and current on the Switch 2 system to qualify for the free upgrade. Japan applies a nominal ¥100 fee due to local legal requirements.
Developer statement
Michael Verrette, Producer at Unknown Worlds, stated: "Bringing Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero to Nintendo Switch 2 is about welcoming new players into that community, while giving longtime fans a chance to experience these worlds again in a way that feels fresh, smooth, and more immersive."
Subnautica 2 status
Subnautica 2 has not been announced for Nintendo Switch 2. The game is entering Early Access in 2026 on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S, with day-one Xbox Game Pass availability. PlayStation 5 is planned for a later date. The developers have stated Switch support will come "when the time is right" but have not provided a timeline.
The fact that Unknown Worlds released Switch 2 ports of the original games demonstrates the studio's relationship with Nintendo's platform. Whether Subnautica 2 eventually comes to Switch 2, potentially after the Early Access period concludes with a full 1.0 release, is unknown. The game is built on Unreal Engine 5, which supports the Switch 2 natively.
