Ryley Robinson
Ryley Robinson is the player character and protagonist of the original Subnautica. He is the Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief aboard the Aurora, an Alterra Corporation Long-Range Capital Ship. He is the sole survivor of the Aurora's crash on Planet 4546B to reach the planet's surface. Ryley is a silent protagonist and does not speak at any point during the game.
Background
Ryley is an Alterra Corporation employee assigned to the Aurora's crew as a non-essential systems maintenance technician. His job title and low-ranking position are referenced throughout the game through PDA entries and corporate messages. His specific background, nationality, and personal history are never detailed beyond his role aboard the ship.
The crash
When the Aurora approached Planet 4546B, the Quarantine Enforcement Platform (an Architect weapon) fired on the ship, causing it to break apart and crash into the ocean. Captain Hollister controlled the descent to minimize casualties. Ryley escaped in Lifepod 5, one of 25 deployed lifepods. He was the only person to make it to the surface alive. All other lifepods either sank, were destroyed, or their occupants perished before or after deployment.
Survival on 4546B
Ryley's survival story is the core of the original Subnautica's plot. Starting from Lifepod 5 with only a Fabricator and a fire extinguisher, he gradually built the tools, vehicles, and bases needed to explore the ocean depths. Key milestones in his journey include:
Building a Scanner and discovering technology blueprints from Aurora wreckage
Constructing the Seamoth, Cyclops, and Prawn Suit for deep-sea exploration
Discovering the Architect facilities: the Quarantine Enforcement Platform, Disease Research Facility, Alien Thermal Plant, and Primary Containment Facility
Contracting the Kharaa Bacterium and watching it progressively infect his body
Making telepathic contact with the Sea Emperor Leviathan imprisoned in the Primary Containment Facility
Hatching five Sea Emperor juveniles who produced stable Enzyme 42, curing the Kharaa infection across the entire planet
Deactivating the Quarantine Enforcement Platform to allow spacecraft to leave the planet
Building and launching a Neptune Escape Rocket to leave Planet 4546B
Alterra debt
The PDA tracked every resource Ryley collected as Alterra property. By the time he built the escape rocket, his accumulated debt reached approximately one trillion credits. The game's ending cutscene shows the Neptune Rocket breaking through the atmosphere as the PDA announces that everything he gathered on 4546B will be billed to his account.
After 4546B
Ryley does not appear in Below Zero or Subnautica 2. His story concludes at the end of the original game. Below Zero takes place two years later with a different protagonist, Robin Ayou, and Subnautica 2 is set on an entirely different planet with a new unnamed pioneer character.
