Robin Ayou
Robin Ayou is the player character and protagonist of Subnautica: Below Zero. She is a marine biologist (xenologist) who traveled to Sector Zero on Planet 4546B to investigate the suspicious death of her sister, Sam Ayou. Robin was the first voiced protagonist in the Subnautica franchise. Subnautica 2 returns to a silent protagonist.
Background
Robin is a xenologist specializing in alien biology. Her sister Sam worked as a researcher for Alterra Corporation at a research station on Planet 4546B. Alterra reported Sam's death as "employee negligence." Unconvinced, Robin traveled to 4546B without authorization to find the truth.
Arrival on 4546B
Robin arrived in Sector Zero, the arctic region of Planet 4546B, two years after the events of the original Subnautica. The Kharaa Bacterium had been cured by the juvenile Sea Emperors hatched by Ryley Robinson, but Alterra had established new research operations in the region, monitored from the Vesper orbital station.
Sam's death
Robin discovered that Alterra had found a Frozen Leviathan in the Glacial Basin still carrying the Kharaa infection. Rather than destroying it, the corporation was studying the pathogen for potential bioweapons. Sam had sabotaged the research by attempting to destroy the samples and the Frozen Leviathan but was killed in the process. Alterra covered up the true cause of her death.
Al-An
While exploring an Architect facility, Robin accidentally downloaded the consciousness of Al-An, an Architect scientist, into her own brain. For the remainder of the game, Robin and Al-An shared her mind. Al-An provided commentary, observations about human behavior, and information about Architect technology. The dynamic between Robin's emotional, investigation-driven mindset and Al-An's analytical, scientific perspective was a central element of Below Zero's narrative.
Al-An was the lead scientist whose unauthorized experiment had originally caused the Kharaa outbreak on 4546B approximately 1,000 years before the events of the games.
Building a body for Al-An
Robin's secondary objective became constructing a new physical body for Al-An. The body required three components scattered across different Architect Caches in Sector Zero. The completed Architect body had a centaur-like form: four legs with a humanoid upper body, crustacean-like pincers for hands, horns on a featureless head, and three free-floating telekinetic arms outside the main body, bioengineered from 27 different species.
Resolution
Robin completed her investigation into Sam's death, confirming Alterra's cover-up. She also finished Al-An's body, and the Architect departed, leaving Robin's mind to herself. With help from Marguerit Maida (the Degasi survivor living independently on 4546B), Robin destroyed Alterra's remaining Kharaa lab samples, completing Sam's sabotage mission.
Voiced protagonist
Robin was the first and so far only voiced protagonist in the Subnautica series. She was voiced by Lucy Hernandez. This was a deliberate departure from the silent protagonist approach used in the original game with Ryley Robinson. The decision was somewhat divisive among fans: some appreciated Robin's personality and her dialogue with Al-An, while others felt it reduced the sense of personal immersion that the silent protagonist provided. Subnautica 2 returns to a silent protagonist, with the Ship AI carrying the narrative role instead.
Story rewrite
Below Zero went through a significant story rewrite during its Early Access period. The original plot featured a different narrative structure and different characters. After community feedback and internal review, Unknown Worlds overhauled the story, rewriting Robin's arc and the Al-An subplot. This rewrite is one of the reasons Below Zero's development took longer than initially planned.
