11The Nibbler Mango is a mid-sized, aggressive creature in Subnautica 2, found in the Coral Gardens. Patch notes shorthand the species as Nibblers, and the June 1, 2026 Hotfix 3 rebalanced it more extensively than any other creature in the game so far. It should not be confused with the Needler Mango, a dart-throwing relative found around Observatory Island; the two are separate species in the same family.2233Appearance4455Community documentation describes a shark-like body with a blue upper side and a grey underside, crossed by yellow stripes outlined in pale blue. Both tail lobes carry a yellow eye-spot ringed in pale yellow. The mouth is short and stout, edged with dark horn-like tissue that sweeps backward from both jaws, and the visible muscle behind the head points to a powerful bite. As with the Marrowbreach, its small eyes sit low on the lower jaw.667+78Behavior89910Nibblers pursue both divers and Tadpoles. They usually hunt in pairs or threes, circling a target before diving in to attack. The PDA databank describes the species as an omnivore adapted to scrape-feeding: it snaps at fish, sponges, kelp, and human limbs with equal enthusiasm, and its heavy jaw crests crush rock and dead coral, which an internal gizzard grinds into paste. The entry frames it as a key recycler of the reef rather than a dedicated carnivore, territorial mostly because it is always hungry.10111112The databank also notes that the Nibbler Mango is not an apex predator. It startles at bright light and loud sound, may band together in small cohorts to defend against larger hunters, and is flagged as dangerous mainly in groups.12131314How to Survive an Encounter14151516CounterEffectDistraction FlareA lit flare pacifies a Nibbler outright: it fixates on the light and rolls in the water, and it follows the flare if thrown. The most reliable counter when several attack at once.Sonic Resonator or Feedback ResonatorA charged blast pushes a Nibbler back and sends it fleeing. The blast lands more easily against the flank, and the charge-up takes time, so start charging while swimming away.Chum Cloud (biomod)Releasing a Chum Cloud distracts nearby Nibblers, though for a shorter time than a flare.1617Hotfix 3 Tuning17181819Hotfix 3 adjusted Nibblers in five ways: their perception range shrank, making players less visible to them; they now circle longer before committing to an attack; their movement speed dropped; their sensitivity to the Survival Multitool went up; and their damage per hit increased. The overall effect mirrors the Marrowbreach changes from the same patch: more time to react, heavier punishment for ignoring them.19202021Scanning and the Slow Metabolism Biomod21222223Scanning a Nibbler Mango with the Scanner adds its databank entry, and bio-sampling the species unlocks the Slow Metabolism biomod, a passive mod that reduces how quickly the player burns through food. The databank tentatively classifies the species as Mango tructa, nicknamed the Nibbler shark, and dwells on its strange dentition: jaw crests loaded with batteries of spare teeth, where new teeth split old ones open as they grow through them.23242425Related Creatures25262627CreatureRelationshipNeedler MangoClose relative with a similar battery of constantly regenerating teeth; a dart-throwing loner by comparison.MarrowbreachLarger relative rebalanced in the same patch; shares the low-set eyes on the lower jaw.
