Leviathan-Class Organisms

Comprehensive leviathan overview across all three games
In the Subnautica universe, leviathan-class is a classification for fauna exceeding a certain size threshold. These are the largest creatures in the games and include both hostile predators and passive giants. In Subnautica 2, Design Lead Anthony Gallegos confirmed that leviathans cannot be killed and the game has no weapons -- players must avoid or interact with them.
The most iconic hostile leviathan. The Reaper is an aggressive predator found in the Crash Zone, Dunes, and Mountains biomes. It is approximately 55 meters long and attacks by grabbing the player or their Seamoth in its mandibles. Its roar, audible from a considerable distance, became one of the most recognizable (and feared) sounds in gaming. Encountering a Reaper for the first time is a defining moment for most Subnautica players.
A translucent, bioluminescent leviathan found in the Lost River (juvenile form), Grand Reef, and the Void/Dead Zone (adults). Adults are approximately 107 meters long. Ghost Leviathans in the Void serve as the map's boundary enforcement, attacking players who swim beyond the playable crater edge. Up to three can spawn in the Void simultaneously.
The largest hostile creature in the original game, found in the Inactive Lava Zone and Lava Lakes at depths exceeding 1,000 meters. The Sea Dragon can spit fireballs and swat players and vehicles with its claws. Only two exist in the game world.
The Sea Emperor is not hostile. It's the last surviving member of its species, held captive in the Primary Containment Facility for over 1,000 years. It communicates telepathically with the player and produces Enzyme 42, the cure for the Kharaa bacterium. Hatching its eggs is the key to completing the game.
A passive leviathan resembling a floating island. Reefbacks drift through mid-water zones with entire ecosystems growing on their backs, including coral, barnacles, and tiger plants. They are harmless and serve as mobile landmarks.
A passive bottom-walking leviathan found in the Sea Treader's Path at around 300 meters. Groups of Sea Treaders walk along the ocean floor, kicking up resource deposits as they move.
An aggressive leviathan resembling an arthropod, found in several Below Zero biomes. It replaced the Reaper as the game's primary hostile leviathan encounter.
An enormous, extremely aggressive creature found in the deepest areas of Below Zero. One of the most dangerous organisms in the franchise.
A passive leviathan covered in bioluminescent photophores. Glow Whales are gentle giants that don't mind human company, with barnacles and algae growing on their bodies.
A dead leviathan encased in ice, still carrying a Kharaa infection. Alterra's research into this specimen is what motivated Sam Ayou's sabotage.
The first hostile leviathan revealed for Subnautica 2. See the full article for details. A squid-like predator with four tentacles, roar attacks, shockwave abilities, and an intelligent AI system that reacts to player behavior in real time.
Leaked milestone documents confirmed that one additional leviathan-class creature was cut from the Early Access scope, leaving the Collector as the only confirmed hostile leviathan at launch.
