Alterra Corporation lore compiled from both games
Alterra Corporation is an interstellar mega-corporation in the Subnautica universe. It owns the spacecraft, employs the protagonists, and represents the corporate backdrop against which the games' survival stories play out.
Alterra owns the Aurora, the ship that crashes on Planet 4546B at the start of the first game. Ryley Robinson is an Alterra employee serving as Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief. The Aurora's mission was to construct a phasegate in the region while searching for the wreck of the Degasi.
Alterra's corporate culture is characterized by a ruthless profit motive. When Ryley escapes 4546B and reaches Alterra space, he receives a message informing him that he owes approximately 1 trillion credits for the materials and resources he used to survive. Everything from the food he fabricated to the rocket he built is billed to his account.
Two years after the first game, Alterra returned to 4546B and established research operations in Sector Zero. Robin Ayou works as an Alterra researcher. The company discovered a frozen leviathan still infected with Kharaa and began studying the bacterium.
Sam Ayou (Robin's sister, also an Alterra employee) uncovered evidence that the company's interest in Kharaa went beyond scientific research, possibly into bioweapons. When Sam sabotaged the research and died in the process, Alterra covered up the true circumstances, reporting it as negligence. This cover-up is what motivates Robin to travel to 4546B in the first place.
Alterra represents corporate exploitation in the Subnautica universe. The company sends employees to dangerous frontier worlds, bills them for their own survival, covers up deaths to protect its reputation, and potentially researches alien pathogens for weaponization. The 1 trillion credit debt from the first game and the cover-up of Sam's death in Below Zero both illustrate the kind of organization players are working for.
