New article: all 40 overworld chests + NPC bedroom chests with location descriptions
There are several kinds of chests scattered across the game:
Town/Island Chests: The standard wooden chests. There are 40 of them across Starsand Town and the wider island. They contain resources, consumables, and blueprints.
Affection-Locked Chests: Two chests in each NPC's home or bedroom, available once you reach Affection Level 3. One holds exclusive decor items, the other refreshes weekly with items from your collection.
Moonlit Forest Chests: 26 chests inside the forest. See the Moonlit Forest walkthrough.
Minigame Chests: Hidden chests that appear after completing a small puzzle or action. Look for red sparkles to find them.
Treasure Map Chests: Found by digging up locations from Treasure Maps. These are random and cannot be mapped because they spawn anywhere. You need to be holding the map to dig up the chest.

#2: On the pier of Windflute Island. Swim across from Blue Beach (the small beach by your home).
#3: Behind your house, near the Damaged Door that leads to the Moonlit Forest.
#10: To the left of the bridge near your home.
#11: At the bottom of the stairs to the right of the bridge by your home.
#4: In the pavilion in the Flower Corridor.
#5: Behind the projection screen in the Flower Corridor.
#7: On the road north of the Exploration Club.
#8: Across from the archery targets in Green Meadow, near the Exploration Club.
#9: At the back of the Green Pasture Ranch main building.
#12: Across from the General Store, by the wall.
#13: Behind the cash register on the upper level of Soluna Cafe.
#14: Inside the kitchen of the Happiness Seed Shop, to the right of the cabinets.
#15: At the front of Ethereal Styles.
#16: Inside the grey shed on Sagewood's property (across from the main entrance).
#17: On the southern pier at Cloud Rest Lake.
#18: Behind the wall on the north side of Cloud Rest Lake.
#19: On the hill north of Cloud Rest Lake, next to the dirt path.
#27: In the pavilion east of Cloud Rest Lake.
#6: On the road under the cliff holding up the Balstrom Heights buildings.
#20: To the right of the main Balstrom Heights temple.
#21: To the left of the Balstrom Heights pond.
#22: Behind the stone tablet in the center pavilion.
#23: Outside Youfang's temple. Exit to the right; the chest is outside the door on the left.
#24: At the back of the highest temple on the hill.
#25: Inside a secret pavilion north of Balstrom Heights. Jump off the mountain from the highest temple, aiming for the pavilion visible below on the right side. Jump from the wrong spot and you have a long walk back up.
#26: On the road under the cliff on the right side of the island.
#28: By the large tree behind the Panda House.
#29: At the back of Hattie's house.
#30: Tucked in the corner of the garden under Aureleaf Kitchen. Drop down from the right-side outdoor area, or climb the staircase and jump over the hedges.
#31: On the right side of Aureleaf Kitchen.
#32: At the back of the hot springs area. Follow the building around to the right.
#33: Under the large staircase near the outdoor market area with a decorative cherry blossom tree.
#34: At the end of the Crane Cape pier.
#35: On the unmapped island near Crane Cape. Swim across the ocean to the point visible on the map; the island is visible from the lighthouse.
#36: At the end of the pier near Delphin's home.
#37: By the rental bikes next to Delphin's home (down the short stairs on the right side of his house).
#38: On the pier by Marston's house.
#39: In one of the circular beach stalls on Half-Moon Bay.
#40: By the vending machines near the picnic tables above Half-Moon Bay.
Every NPC with their own home or bedroom has two hidden chests you can only reach at Affection Level 3. The first is a wooden chest with exclusive home decor items related to that character. The second is a blue-grey chest that refreshes every week with items you have previously collected. Both chests disappear after opening but reappear weekly.
Check each location every week once you have the access.
Alex: Upstairs above Lex Woodworks.
Aurelis: Up the stairs, above Aureleaf Kitchen.
Charlene: Behind the staff gate by Soluna Cafe (unlock condition unclear, may be Charlene-specific).
Doctor Fang: Inside his bedroom in his house on the far left of the island. Doctor Fang does not arrive until Autumn 1.
Delphin: Upstairs in Delphin's home. Access from the back of the building via the stairs.
Graminova: Upstairs in the Happiness Seed Shop. Go around the back and climb the stairs.
Loren: Inside Chrono Arcade.
Lunelle: Above Ethereal Styles.
Neona: Up the stairs to the left of G-Power Bikes.
Nia: Inside Nia's house on the ground floor. Nia does not arrive until Autumn 1.
Pastelle: Upstairs in Green Pasture Ranch.
Serena: Inside Serena's house on the ground floor.
Sylvain: Take the stairs to the left of Silvan Notes.
Solara: Upstairs in her house (the street above the Community Center).
Stella: Inside Woof & Wow Pets.
Youfang: Inside the main Balstrom Temple.
Zephyria: Upstairs in the Exploration Club.
Zerine: Up the stairs to the left of the General Store.
Gust and Ginger arrive on Summer 23 of your first year and likely have chests in their houses as well.
