Gmax Crops

New article: Gmax crop mechanics, 3x3 planting, fragments, and Intermediate Farmer quest
Gmax crops are giant mutations of regular crops. When one triggers, a huge version of the plant grows across the tilled soil, replacing the individual plots. You harvest them with a Hatchet (not your normal harvesting method), and they yield the crop itself, some seeds, and a Crop Fragment.
Gmax crops sell for more than the individual plants would have, so they are worth targeting once you are set up for it.
Plant 9 of the same crop in a 3x3 grid on tilled farmland. All 9 plants need to grow at the same speed, which means:
Use the same seed type in all 9 plots.
Clear weeds immediately so they do not stall any individual plant's growth.
Place a Rabbit Hutch nearby to help keep weeds under control.
When done during the Intermediate Farmer quest, the Gmax crop appears to trigger immediately. Outside of the quest, it has a low random chance. Keep planting 3x3 grids until one triggers.
One thing to know: when a Gmax mutation grows, it removes the tilled soil underneath. You will have to re-till those plots afterward.
The Intermediate Farmer certification quest from Graminova requires you to obtain one Season Crop Fragment. You need any one of these:
Pineapple Fragment (Spring)
Watermelon Fragment (Summer)
Pumpkin Fragment (Autumn)
Winter Melon Fragment (Winter)
Since you will likely hit this quest during your first Summer, Watermelon Fragment is the most common one to go for. Buy 9 Watermelon Seeds from the Happiness Seed Shop, plant them in a 3x3 grid, keep the weeds clear, and harvest the resulting Gmax Watermelon with a Hatchet.
Each crop is season-exclusive, so you have one shot per season. If you miss Summer, you can try Pumpkin in Autumn, and so on.
If you want to prevent Gmax from triggering accidentally (since it destroys tilled soil), keep your farm plots 2 wide or narrower. A 3x3 block is the minimum for a mutation.
Getting the Expert Farmer certification from Graminova unlocks the best seeds, so keep progressing the farming questline.
Gmax crops are profitable. Once you have the setup, they are worth targeting even after the quest is done.
