Overview
Solarpunk does not focus on combat or violence. There are no enemies, no weapons and no fights, so every way of dying in the game is environmental. Death is treated as a setback to recover from rather than a punishment, and the game deliberately avoids detailed depictions of violence when it happens.
If you die you respawn and can recover your inventory. In an Easy World you keep your inventory outright and cannot be struck by lightning at all.
How You Can Die
Hazard | Where It Happens | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Falling from an island | The edges of any of the floating islands | More than half of all players have fallen off an island at least once, going by the achievement awarded for it, so the game treats it as an expected first-time experience. |
Falling from the airship | While flying or standing on the airship deck | Stepping off the deck in flight has the same result as walking off an island edge. |
Lightning strike | During storms, see Weather System | Cannot happen in an Easy World. In a Standard World, being outdoors during a thunderstorm carries real risk. |
Airship crash | While flying | Crashing the airship is listed as its own hazard, separate from stepping off the deck. |
What Happens When You Die
You respawn and can recover your inventory. In a Standard World that means going back for your items, which is why long hauls of building materials across island edges are worth doing carefully. In an Easy World the items simply stay with you.
There is no permadeath, no world reset, and no penalty applied to your base, crops or animals when you die. Nothing you have built is at risk.
Getting Unstuck
Three separate recovery tools exist in the in-game menu, and they solve different problems.
Tool | Where to Find It | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
Respawn | In the menu | Respawns your character, which frees you if you are wedged somewhere in the world geometry. |
Airship respawn | In the menu | Respawns the airship by moving it upward into open air so it can be used again. |
Unstuck Me | In the in-game menu | The dedicated unstuck button. It originally sat at the very bottom of Settings, then General, where players regularly failed to find it, and a June 2026 update moved it into the in-game menu alongside the other two. Older guides still point at the old location. |
Recovering a Stranded Airship
One specific situation catches players out. If you use Unstuck while your airship is parked on a different island, you return to the main island without it, and if you no longer have an Airship Dock you have no way to call the ship back.
The recovery route is to rebuild a dock, which means finding cotton again:
Fish in the pond on the main island.
Collect cotton seeds from what you catch.
Plant and grow the cotton, then harvest it. See Farming and Plants.
Craft a new airship dock from the harvested cotton.
Use the dock to call your airship back.
This can take a while, because cotton seeds do not always appear quickly when fishing. The developers have said they plan to increase the chance of finding cotton seeds so that this recovery is less frustrating, and that they want to make the situation clearer in the game itself.
The Menu Does Not Pause the Game
Solarpunk has no pause feature. Opening the menu does not stop the world: crops keep growing, the day and night cycle keeps advancing, hunger and thirst keep draining, and weather keeps rolling in. This matters most when you open the menu to use Respawn or Unstuck Me during a storm, and it applies in single-player as well as co-op.
