Building and Construction

Comprehensive article on building mechanics with all verified details
Building and construction is one of Solarpunk's core activities. Players assemble structures on their floating islands using a tool called the Build-Hammer, which opens a compact radial menu of building options. Construction follows a freeform system where players place individual pieces to create custom structures.
The Build-Hammer is the player's primary building tool. It is crafted at the Crafting Table using Stone and Stick. Once equipped, it opens a wheel-style radial menu that provides access to all available building categories.
The radial menu offers the following construction options:
Category | Function |
|---|---|
Foundations | Flat base platforms that form the ground layer of structures |
Walls | Vertical panels for enclosing spaces |
Door frames | Wall variants with openings for door placement |
Doors | Functional doors that open and close |
Roofs | Angled or flat panels for covering structures |
Stairs | Inclined pieces for moving between levels |
Fences | Low barriers for perimeters and decorative boundaries |
Poles | Vertical support structures |
Decorations | Cosmetic items for customizing interiors and exteriors |
Buildings can be constructed from several material types:
Wood is the most basic and widely available material, gathered by chopping trees with an Axe
Brick provides a sturdier alternative with a different visual style
Glass allows for transparent walls and windows
Decorations include various cosmetic options; the Kickstarter campaign unlocked an expanded set of decorative items
A standard building process follows this general order:
Place foundations to establish the footprint and ground level
Raise walls on the foundation edges to enclose spaces
Insert door frames where entrances are needed, then attach doors
Add roofing to cover the structure from rain
Build stairs to connect multiple floors or reach elevated areas
Finish with decorations and interior furnishings
Structures can be demolished using the Axe. Demolishing a placed building piece recovers approximately half of the resources originally spent on it. This partial refund means players can experiment with layouts and rebuild without losing everything, though it is not entirely free to make mistakes.
Building is not restricted to island surfaces. Players can use off-island hovering platforms to extend construction into the open air, creating structures that float alongside the island. This is useful for expanding energy installations or farming operations beyond the natural terrain.
