Bosses are a distinct enemy tier in Showa American Story, named as such in a publisher trailer caption alongside zombies and monsters. In a translated 2024 interview the studio said the number of bosses is deliberately small, with encounters placed at plot climaxes rather than scattered through the world. That statement is second-hand and has not been restated since.
Mechanically, bosses in the build shown at gamescom 2026 used the same Break Gauge and Executions systems as ordinary enemies rather than being exempt from them. Whether that holds in the finished game is unknown, since the developers describe that build as adjusted and unrepresentative. Four encounters have been described in enough detail to document here. Three further sightings from the build shown at gamescom 2026 carry no accompanying detail and are listed at the foot of this page.
Encounter | Where it appeared | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
A pair of gang bosses | Chapter 3 on Mount Neo Yokohama, in the gamescom 2026 demo | Demo build only; no official English names |
The Chapter 4 boss | The Golden Gate Bridge, in the gamescom 2026 demo | Demo build plus the official demo guide; unidentified |
Shogun | The 2024 trailer | Developer description, October 2024 |
Gokou | A reveal in August 2024 | Described at a 2024 reveal; little shown since |
The Gang Boss Pair on Mount Neo Yokohama
At the top of the Chapter 3 mountain climb, in the build shown at gamescom 2026, Chigusa Choko finds two bosses of The Warriors roasting a man over a fire, and the fight opens with a bombastic classical battle theme. Neither boss has an official English name and neither is named here. Nothing about their health, phases or movesets has been published.
The Chapter 4 Boss at the Golden Gate Bridge
Chapter 4 of the demo sends Choko after the Man in Black, ending in a moonlit fight on the Golden Gate Bridge. As shown in that build, the encounter is multi-phase and drawn out, mixing cutscenes, a chase sequence and quick-time prompts. The opponent is black-clad and ninja-styled, fights with a katana, and closes distance quickly before attacking in combinations.
The developers have not said whether this opponent is Mutsuki Akitora, the katana-wielding swordsman introduced at gamescom 2026. The two have been widely linked since the demo, but nothing official confirms it, and this page does not treat them as the same character.
Shogun
Shogun is a boss introduced with the 2024 trailer. In the studio's own English text from October 2024, the creative director described him as standing six metres tall, striking with a giraffe's long neck, and able to fly, throwing his shield at the player to attack. The same text adds that he carries a shield, wears a fluttering cape, and is shown riding a black giraffe.
Gokou
Gokou was revealed in August 2024 and described as the governor of Texas: an American deeply versed in Japanese culture, presented as a mix of American cowboy and Japanese samurai, who in the fiction engineered the sale of Texas to Japan. The reveal also stated explicitly that he is not the final boss and not the overarching villain. Little has been shown of him since.
Other Demo Encounters
The exploration section of the build shown at gamescom 2026 also held a hidden boss and a set of one-on-one consecutive duel events, and a swordsman on the mountain who has resolved to cut down a thousand villains. All three are demo-build sightings with no accompanying detail, and none of the characters involved has been named. See gamescom 2026 Demo for the scope of that build and Combat and Weapons for the systems these fights use.
What Is Not Known
As of September 2026 no boss health values, phase counts, attack names, weaknesses or rewards have been published, and no boss has been confirmed as the last one in the game. The trailers show further characters and enemies who have never been named, so the list above is what has been shown, not the full roster.
