Sea of Remnants opens with a sailor waking up with nothing. They are one of the puppetfolk, they have lost all memory of who they were, and they are accompanied by a mysterious girl. The journey that follows is described not as a treasure hunt but as an attempt to sail into the depths of oblivion and retrieve the people, memories and truths the sea has swallowed.
The Sea of Remnants

The title refers to a place inside the story. Legend holds that beyond the moon lies another sea where all questions are answered, though nobody has proven it exists. First party copy describes it as the destination all seas lead to, where the truth waits, and as a place where memories cost everything. A 2026 gameplay showcase suggested viewers might catch a glimpse of it.
The framing device that recurs across trailers is a bottle. Memories of past voyages are described as flowing together into glowing magenta currents that link every island, monster lair and distant port, and another memory bottle sinking into the sea scatters ripples across the tide. The first look trailer turned on a character holding a memory bottle whose face felt familiar to the sailor, with the suggestion that this might not be the first time the two had crossed paths.
Themes
The developers state the themes directly: oblivion and reconstruction, and a pursuit of the world's underlying truth. The loop supports them. Voyages repeat, the world transforms, and every bond formed is said to resurface at the journey's end. The line the team uses to summarise the whole design is that this is not a game about what you take from the ocean, it is a game about who you go back for.
Peoples and Terms
Term | What is known |

Errants | Those who wake in Orbtopia after a shipwreck with their skills lost, and set out again. |
Shoreless | Named as the people for whom the Illusion Troupe fleet is a home. Not otherwise explained. |
The Talon | Named as a heavy presence in the Bridge Sea, apparently up to something. Not otherwise explained. |
The Empress | Named as the figure under whose banner the Dawnbreaker fleet gathers. Not otherwise explained. |
Orbtopia and Forgetting
The hub city is bound into the story rather than sitting outside it. Its townsfolk are described as living a recurring existence on the edge of forgetfulness, and shipwrecked Errants wake there having lost their skills. It is also the place that changes most visibly in response to the player, with the city's political structure and cityscape both described as shifting according to who is befriended, provoked or removed. See Orbtopia.
Choice
The stated narrative model is that small actions ripple outward. Rival factions react to what a captain does, alliances and storylines shift, and power structures are redrawn. The design goal repeated across announcements is that no two captains share the same story. See Gameplay.
Tone
The tone is deliberately mixed. Alongside the memory-loss premise sit slapstick comedy, cartoony hijinks and comic book onomatopoeia, and the developers describe the finished feel as a pirate adventure that is wild, romantic and utterly punk. The near-silent player character is contrasted with the talkative adventurer R.S. See Crewmates.
