Hunting and fishing are gameplay features introduced in Rooted's Alpha Phase 3. Both systems expand the food management options available to players, providing alternatives to foraging for berries and other gathered food sources. These features work alongside gardening to create a diverse set of food production methods.
Hunting allows players to pursue wildlife for food and materials. Two primary hunting methods are available:
Firearms: Players can use rifles and other weapons to hunt animals at range. This method is faster but produces noise that may attract enemies.
Hunting traps: Passive traps that can be placed in areas where wildlife is active. Traps allow players to capture animals without direct confrontation and without generating noise.
Deer were the first wildlife species introduced to Rooted, added in January 2026 during Alpha Phase 3. They serve as the foundational animal for the hunting system, providing players with a food source that requires either tracking and shooting or trap placement. As neutral animals, deer flee from players rather than attacking, making them a low-risk but skill-dependent food source.
Fishing in Rooted uses fish traps placed in water bodies. Players position traps in lakes, rivers, or other water sources and return later to collect their catch. This passive approach fits the game's emphasis on planning and resource management rather than action-based minigames.
Fishing can also be done from boats, adding a nautical dimension to the food gathering process. The swimming system, which was added in Alpha Phase 2, supports the water-based aspects of fishing by allowing players to access and set traps in bodies of water that cannot be reached from the shore.
Hunting and fishing are part of a larger food management ecosystem that includes gardening and foraging. The variety of food sources means players can adapt their strategy to their environment and playstyle. A player based in a forested area near water might rely heavily on fishing and hunting, while a player in a more sheltered location might focus on gardening.
The addition of hunting and fishing to Phase 3 was partly driven by the introduction of wildlife to the game world. The presence of animals like deer, bears, and wolves created both threats and opportunities, with hunting providing a concrete gameplay reason for wildlife interactions beyond pure combat.
