Base Building

Comprehensive article on base building mechanics, confirmed items, and settlement locations
Base building is a core system in Rooted that allows players to create shelters and camps across the open world. The system supports constructions ranging from small cabins to extensive camps equipped with furniture, storage containers, workstations, and defensive structures. Placement uses a free rotation, modular system that gives players full control over the orientation and arrangement of every placed object.
Players can establish camps in three general environment types, each offering different advantages and challenges:
Location type | Advantages | Challenges |
|---|---|---|
Forest | Relative safety from enemies, abundant natural resources, low contamination | Limited access to advanced salvage materials |
Village | Existing structures to settle in, moderate salvage availability | Moderate enemy activity, some contamination risk |
Downtown | Best salvage materials and loot | Heavy contamination, highest enemy density, requires protective equipment |
Players are not limited to a single base. Multiple camps and outposts can be established throughout the world, creating networks of safe points that support longer expeditions into dangerous territory. This multi-base approach allows players to stage supplies closer to their exploration targets rather than returning to a single central location after every expedition.
The modular building system lets players snap components together or place them freely with full rotational control. Structures can be built from scratch or players can settle within existing buildings found in the world, reinforcing and customizing them as needed. The ability to save blueprints means that successful designs can be replicated at new locations without rebuilding from memory.
Blueprints are particularly useful in cooperative play, where a team might want consistent base layouts across multiple outposts. One player can design an effective camp layout, save it as a blueprint, and share that design for use at future settlement sites.
The following base building items have been confirmed through alpha testing and developer communications:
Item | Function |
|---|---|
Storage chests | Container for storing gathered materials, equipment, and supplies |
Campfires | Heat and cooking source; requires fuel with varying burn times |
Tents | Shelter for rest and weather protection |
Beds | Rest point for player characters |
Cooking pot | Used for boiling water and preparing food |
Hammock | Alternative rest point |
Bench | Seating and rest furniture |
Brazier | Heat and light source |
Geodome Pod | Enclosed shelter structure |
Beyond basic shelter and storage, bases can be improved with defensive installations and automated systems. Players can fortify their camps against enemy attacks, supply electricity to power equipment, automate certain tasks, and develop workshops for advanced crafting. The defensive aspect is particularly relevant for bases located in higher-danger zones, where enemy encounters are more frequent.
In multiplayer sessions with up to 6 players, base building becomes a collaborative effort. Multiple players can contribute to the same camp, dividing tasks like resource gathering, construction, and defensive preparation. Shared bases serve as gathering points between expeditions, where teams organize supplies, plan routes, and prepare equipment before heading out together.
