11Overview223344Base building in Rooted allows players to create shelters and fortified positions in the post-apocalyptic world. The system combines modular construction of new structures with the ability to secure and repurpose existing buildings found throughout the map.5566Placement System7788Rooted uses a free-rotation placement system with no grid restrictions. Players can rotate building pieces freely to fit any terrain or layout. This allows for creative base designs that adapt to the environment rather than being constrained by a fixed grid.991010Building Approaches11111212ApproachDescriptionModular constructionBuild new structures from scratch using gathered resources. Start with wood-tier materials available from the beginning.Securing existing structuresClaim and fortify abandoned houses, apartments, or office floors. Board up windows, add doors, and reinforce walls.1313Players can maintain multiple bases simultaneously. Camp locations can be established in forests, villages, or downtown areas, each offering different strategic advantages and proximity to resources or Contaminated Zones.14141515Outposts16161717In addition to primary bases, players can settle outposts by securing individual houses, offices, or entire building floors. These outposts serve as forward operating positions for exploration and resource gathering in more dangerous areas of the map.18181919Building Tiers20202121The building system features material tiers that gate construction quality behind progression:22222323Wood tier: Available immediately at spawn. Provides basic shelter but limited protection against enemies.Higher tiers unlock as players progress, providing better durability and defense against increasingly powerful threats.24242525Build Menu26262727The build menu has been revamped with quality-of-life improvements:28282929Double-click selection for faster item placement.Closure buttons for easy menu navigation.Keyboard shortcuts for frequently used building actions.30303131Base Defense323233333434Players can protect their bases using craftable defensive structures including barricades, partitions, and traps. These items are placed around base perimeters to deter or damage enemies that attempt to breach the player's territory.35353636Modular Construction37373838Rooted's base building system supports modular camp construction with free rotation rather than a grid-locked snap system. Players place walls, floors, roofs, and supports as they need them, letting the base shape adapt to the terrain or to the bones of an existing structure being reclaimed.39394040Building Flow41414242Choose a location: forest clearing, village ruin, or downtown shell.Lay foundations using salvaged or harvested materials such as logs, planks, slabs.Add walls, roof, and entry points, balancing visibility with cover.Install workbench, storage chests, racks for slabs, planks, and metal sheets.Layer in electricity and automation as power components come online.Add base defenses against survivor raids and ROTOR patrols.43434444Structural Stability Rework (In Development)45454646A rework of the modular build system is in development and not yet in the public build. The classic modular build sits on a stronger foundation: pieces snap together, and a real stability model means a structure holds or comes down depending on what is carrying it. Reinforcements can harden what has been raised. Alongside the from-scratch building, survivors will still be able to move into places already standing in the world, clear out the inside, and make them their own. The studio describes this as the systems layer, with meshes, animation, and world content authored separately on top.47474848Securing Existing Structures49495050Beyond modular construction, players can secure existing structures across the world: houses in villages, offices in downtown, and other ruins that already have walls and shape. This reduces material cost in exchange for the work of clearing the structure and integrating it with the build system.51515252Multiple Bases53535454Players can run multiple bases simultaneously across the map. Forward outposts cut travel time on long salvage routes through contaminated zones; the main base centralizes workshop output, storage, and the electricity-and-automation backbone. Co-op groups can divide responsibilities across bases as the team scales toward six players.55555656District-Scale Power (In Development)57575858A June 12, 2026 development update tied base power into a larger grid, work that is in development and not yet in the public build. The electricity model solves networks of producers, batteries, and consumers with a watt balance, shedding load by priority when production falls short. At a larger scale, substations and a power plant form a repair chain that gates whole-district consumers, so bringing a district's grid back online becomes its own objective. The state of the network persists in saves. This integration is confirmed development direction.59596060Placement And Building Feel (In Development)61616262A late June 2026 development update focused on how building runs and feels rather than on adding new pieces, work that is in development and not yet in the public build. Placement pieces line up and snap onto structures that are already standing as they are positioned, and a preview shows what a piece will cost before it is committed. The placement controls were tightened for cleaner handling.63636464These building-flow changes are confirmed development direction rather than shipped content.65656666Demolition Preview (In Development)67676868A mid-July 2026 development update rounded out the base-building loop from placement through teardown, work that is in development and not yet in the public build. Taking a piece down now shows a collapse preview first, so a survivor can see which connected parts the stability model will bring down before committing to the demolition. Paired with the earlier placement and cost previews, this gives build, reinforce, and remove a single consistent feel across the whole loop. This demolition preview is confirmed development direction rather than released content.696970+Structural Support And Refunds71+72+The demolition preview only means something because support is now computed while you build. Every placed piece registers what it rests on and what rests on it at the moment it goes down, so the structure carries a real dependency chain. Knock out a load-bearing piece and everything it was carrying comes with it, including pieces further up the chain that were resting on those. Looking at a piece also warns you when it is barely supported, before you have to find out the hard way.73+74+Working on a piece is an ordinary interaction rather than a separate mode. Depositing materials into a blueprint is a single tap that pulls everything matching out of your pack at once, and anyone in the session can contribute to the same blueprint. Demolishing, repairing and reinforcing all sit on the piece itself, with the destructive options behind a hold so nothing comes down by accident.75+76+Tearing something down is not a pure loss. An undamaged piece refunds its full material cost, and a damaged one refunds a share proportional to the condition it has left, which makes repair and demolition a genuine trade rather than an obvious choice. If your pack is full when the refund lands, the remainder drops into the world instead of vanishing. None of this is in the public alpha build.77+78+ActionBehaviourPlaceSnaps to what is already there; the preview shows the cost before you commitDepositOne tap hauls every matching material from your pack into the blueprint; anyone can pitch inRepairRestores a damaged piece and its share of the eventual refundReinforceHardens a piece that is already standingDemolishBehind a hold; runs a dry-run collapse and stamps every piece that would fallRefundFull cost on an undamaged piece, proportional on a damaged one; overflow drops into the world7079Building Work On The Public Roadmap71807281The base-building pillar has more in-progress cards than any other on the studio's public roadmap, which matches the volume of building work described in the mid-2026 development logs.73827483EntryStatusNotesFoundation build systemCompletedThe basic modular construction system underneath everything else.Procedural wall and fence generatorsCompletedTwo separate cards, letting long runs of wall and fencing be laid without placing every piece by hand.Mechanical workbenchCompletedThe advanced tier of the workbench line.Strip and reclaim any buildingIn progressTearing out the furniture, clutter, and debris inside any pre-collapse house or apartment, then refitting the cleared interior with crafting stations, storage, and defences.Workbench tiers and guidesIn progressTier progression with salvage, repair, and exclusive blueprint guides. Placement uses free rotation with no grid, so pieces are not limited to 45 or 90 degree steps. Securing a location is progressive, starting with wooden planks and moving up to police and army equipment as materials allow. The design question the studio poses for itself is whether survivors twenty years after a collapse would still be living in a dirty cabin or would have built something better with the time, resources, and knowledge available. Multiple bases are supported, and the studio has noted that world conditions may force a long stay in the city rather than a return to a forest camp.78877988A special Cabin Founder blueprint exists as a backer reward, using unique assets that cannot be reproduced in-game. Blueprint sharing through Steam Workshop is planned.
