Player-versus-player combat in Roco Kingdom: World centers on strategic team building and in-match decision-making rather than raw stat grinding. During all PvP matches, creature levels are standardized and equalized, which means a freshly caught spirit performs on par with a heavily cultivated one as far as base stats are concerned. Victory hinges on team composition, skill selection, type matchups, and the ability to adapt mid-battle. This design philosophy ensures that every player can compete on a level playing field regardless of time invested or money spent.
There are three main PvP formats available: Star Duel (the primary ranked ladder), Open-air Duel (casual overworld battles), and the Flash Tournament, also known as the Shining Contest or Radiant Competition (a limited-time event with boosted rewards). Each format provides a different competitive experience, and together they form the backbone of the endgame PvP ecosystem.
Star Duel (星光对决) is the main competitive PvP mode and the heart of the ranked experience. Players queue into turn-based matches using teams of six spirits, battling opponents of similar rank on the competitive ladder. The mode is accessible once a player has unlocked the combat system and can field a full team. Star Duel matches take place in a dedicated arena at the Magic Academy.

One of the most important features of Star Duel is level equalization. When a match begins, all spirits on both teams are temporarily adjusted to the same level. This removes any advantage gained from grinding or pay-to-win mechanics. What matters is the inherent species values, natures, talent tiers, and the skills each spirit brings to the battle. A well-composed team with smart play will always beat a poorly composed one, no matter how much time the opponent has spent leveling.
The Star Duel ladder is divided into five major tiers, each containing five sub-ranks. Every sub-rank uses a star-based progression system: winning a match earns stars, and losing a match costs stars. Collecting enough stars within a sub-rank promotes the player to the next sub-rank or tier. The complete tier breakdown is as follows.
Tier | Chinese Name | Sub-ranks | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Trainee | 见习 | 1 through 5 (star-based) | Starting tier for new players |
Beginner | 初级 | 1 through 5 (star-based) | Players begin learning type matchups |
Intermediate | 中级 | 1 through 5 (star-based) | Team composition starts to matter significantly |
Advanced | 高级 | 1 through 5 (star-based) | Meta awareness becomes essential |
Master | 大师 | 1 through 5 (star-based) | Top-tier play with refined strategies |
A player's initial placement is determined by a seeding evaluation that factors in the combined strength of the six spirits chosen for the team. Depending on roster quality, players may start anywhere from Trainee 1 to Beginner 3. From that point forward, all progression is earned through wins and losses.
Star Duel uses a unique Morale Point system that governs how matches end. Each player starts the match with 4 Morale Points. Whenever a spirit on your team is knocked out, you lose 1 Morale Point. When a player's Morale Points reach 0, the match ends and that player loses. This system replaces the traditional "knock out all six" approach and introduces a layer of strategic pressure. Every switch, every sacrifice, and every spirit that falls carries real weight.
Because you only have 4 Morale Points but carry 6 spirits, you effectively have a buffer of 2 spirits that can faint before the match concludes. Skilled players use this buffer to pivot defensively, sending in a spirit purely to absorb a powerful attack and protect a more valuable teammate. Managing morale is just as important as dealing damage.
To prevent a single overpowered spirit from sweeping an entire opposing team, Star Duel employs an energy budget system. Each player has a total energy pool of 10 points. Every skill used in combat consumes a certain number of energy points. Once the pool is exhausted, the player can no longer use skills and must rely on basic attacks or switch spirits. This constraint forces players to distribute their energy across multiple spirits rather than funneling everything into one.
Energy management is a critical skill at higher ranks. Spending too much energy early can leave you unable to handle an opponent's reserves in the late game. Conversely, hoarding energy may allow the opponent to build an insurmountable advantage. Finding the right balance is the hallmark of Master-tier play.
The dynamic weather system from the overworld carries over into PvP matches. Certain spirits and abilities can summon weather conditions such as rain, sandstorms, snow, or blood moon. Weather affects both players equally, modifying element type damage, accuracy, and even ability effects. For example, rain boosts Water-type moves while weakening Fire-type moves. Teams built around weather manipulation can gain a significant edge by tailoring their lineup to exploit favorable conditions.
The competitive meta at Master tier evolves with balance patches and new spirit releases. As of early April 2026, several team archetypes dominate the ladder. The most successful composition has been reported at roughly 80% winrate among top players.
This composition revolves around stacking buffs and striking with overwhelming speed. It is currently the highest win-rate archetype in Master tier and the benchmark that other builds must answer.
Spirit | Chinese Name | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
天鹅 | Buffer | Provides team-wide stat enhancements at the start of each round; core enabler of the strategy | |
沉铁兽 | First-strike attacker | Attacks before most opponents thanks to its priority trait; pairs well with Swan's buffs | |
冰猪 | Disruptor | Freezes or slows enemy spirits, breaking their momentum and enabling follow-up attacks | |
火狗 | Speed attacker | High base speed combined with strong Fire-type damage output; punishes slow teams | |
羚羊 | Flex / speed boost | Passively raises the team's speed stat when sent into battle; can be swapped in situationally | |
狼王 | Flex / recovery | Heals itself while finishing weakened opponents; excellent for closing out matches |
A more patient strategy that relies on stacking poison damage over several turns to wear opponents down. This archetype excels against teams that lack cleanse abilities.
Thousand Thorn Armor: Opens the match by setting up defensive layers and applying initial poison on contact.
Crystal Jellyfish: Inflicts heavy poison status with multi-hit abilities, ramping up damage over time.
Peika: Converts existing poison stacks into burst damage, serving as the team's finisher.
Deadly Poison Xiuluo: Main sustained damage dealer once poison stacks are established.
Swan: Provides sustain and buffs to keep the poison core alive through extended fights.
Built around Unicorn's Leader Bloodline, this team focuses on outspeeding opponents and controlling the tempo from turn one. It punishes teams that rely on setup turns.
Unicorn with Leader Bloodline: Anchor of the team; its bloodline grants a global speed aura that benefits every teammate.
Star Lion: Brings strong single-target burst and benefits directly from the speed advantage to strike first.
Topiary Lady: Crowd control specialist that pins down threats before they can act.
Parseus: Flexible attacker that exploits openings created by the speed lead.
Lurker: Dark-type surprise pick that punishes predictable switches.
Thousand Thorn Armor: Provides a defensive pivot and hazard control for the team.
Open-air Duel (露天对决) is the casual PvP format available directly in the overworld. Players can challenge any nearby player to an impromptu battle without entering a queue or affecting their Star Duel rank. Open-air Duels use the same level equalization rules as Star Duel, so they serve as an excellent practice ground for testing new team compositions and strategies before committing them to the ranked ladder.
Because Open-air Duels carry no rank consequences, they are popular for friendly matches between friends and guild members. Rewards are modest compared to Star Duel, typically granting a small amount of Roco Shells and experience.
The Shining Contest (闪耀大赛), also called the Flash Tournament or Radiant Competition, is a limited-time PvP event that runs during specific windows within each season. During Season 1: Dark Night Collecting Light, the Radiant Competition is the flagship PvP tournament, offering double the normal Star Duel rewards. Players who participate during the event window earn bonus Locke Coins, exclusive cosmetics, seasonal medals, and enhanced Light-Catching Ball drops.
The Shining Contest uses the same rules and ranking system as Star Duel, so there is no need to learn a new format. The primary incentive is the doubled reward rate, which makes it the most efficient time to climb the ladder and stockpile resources. Expect stronger competition during these periods, as high-tier players tend to be more active when rewards are boosted.
Participating in any PvP mode grants a variety of resources and exclusive prizes. The specific rewards vary by mode and rank.
Reward | Source | Details |
|---|---|---|
Locke Coins | All PvP modes | Earned after every battle; winners receive a larger payout than losers |
Medal bonuses | Star Duel | One-time rewards for reaching new tier milestones |
Weekly challenges | Star Duel | Completing weekly PvP tasks grants Light-Catching Balls and Collected Light Tokens |
Seasonal cosmetics | Star Duel / Shining Contest | Each season features exclusive outfits, titles, and spirit skins at specific tier thresholds |
Double rewards | Shining Contest only | All Star Duel rewards are doubled during the event window |
Tournament medals | Shining Contest only | Exclusive medals and nameplates awarded to top participants |
Players who use Unicorn's quick-climb system gain +5 stars per win and lose only 1 star per defeat in the lower tiers, significantly accelerating early progression through the ladder.
Build a diverse roster. A single team composition will eventually be hard-countered. Having two or three viable teams lets you adapt to the current meta.
Pay attention to your opponent's lead spirit. Their opening pick often reveals the archetype they are running, allowing you to counter-pick accordingly.
Manage your energy budget carefully. Blowing all 10 energy points in the first few turns leaves you defenseless later.
Use morale points strategically. Sometimes sacrificing a spirit to absorb a devastating attack saves you from losing a more important team member.
Study the element type chart thoroughly. Type advantage is the foundation of every winning strategy.
Spectate top-ranked players. Watching high-level matches is one of the best ways to learn new strategies, and it earns you Locke Coins at the same time.
Practice in Open-air Duel before entering Star Duel with a new composition. There is no rank penalty for losing in casual mode.
Coordinate with friends through the multiplayer features to set up practice matches and test matchup-specific strategies.
