Initial Professor Tangrowth character article
Professor Tangrowth is the first Pokemon the player encounters in Pokemon Pokopia and serves as the primary guide throughout the game. Distinguished from regular Tangrowth by white vines, broken glasses perched on its head, a walking stick, and a TM disc balanced atop its head, Professor Tangrowth is the last Pokemon that remained in the withered world while all others were placed into digital storage.
When Ditto wakes from its slumber, Professor Tangrowth is waiting nearby. It introduces the player to the basic mechanics of the game, explains the state of the world, and provides initial guidance on gathering materials, crafting, and building. Throughout the story, Tangrowth offers hints about quest objectives and explains new systems as they become available.
Professor Tangrowth holds knowledge about the world's history and gradually reveals details about why the humans left and what happened to the Pokemon. Its position as the sole survivor makes it the primary source of lore in the game.
Professor Tangrowth is the only Pokemon in the entire game with the Appraise specialty. This means it is the sole Pokemon capable of identifying Lost Relics found inside glowing blocks throughout the world. There are 46 Small Relics and 37 Large Relics to discover. Once appraised, relics can be exchanged with Gimmighoul (the only Pokemon with the Collect specialty) for unique furniture items.
Professor Tangrowth provides the player's first Castform Weather Charms during the story, which are required to set up weather change sites. Additional charms can be obtained from Pokemon Center Terminals, Lost Relics, or towers on Dream Islands.
