Initial Ditto character article
The player character in Pokemon Pokopia is a Ditto, the Transform Pokemon. Unlike ordinary Ditto, this one possesses the unique ability to maintain a stable human form indefinitely. After waking from a long slumber in the Withered Wasteland, this Ditto discovers it has gained surprising crafting abilities alongside its natural transformation powers. It chose to mimic the shape of its lost trainer, and under guidance from Professor Tangrowth, sets out to restore the desolate world.
Ditto's core mechanic in Pokopia revolves around learning moves from befriended Pokemon. Rather than combat attacks, these moves function as environmental tools. Ditto physically transforms parts of its body when using a move: its arms become Squirtle-shaped cannons for Water Gun, its claws extend like Scyther's blades for Cut, and so on.
There are 13 learnable moves in total, each taught by a specific Pokemon found across the game's five areas. Moves are switched using a power wheel similar to a tool ring. Each move consumes PP from the blue gauge at the bottom-right of the screen.
Move | Teacher | Area | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
Water Gun | Squirtle | Withered Wasteland | Spray water in + pattern; revitalize ground, water crops |
Leafage | Bulbasaur | Withered Wasteland | Grow tall grass; create plant patches |
Cut | Scyther | Withered Wasteland | Chop trees, grass, wood piles |
Rock Smash | Hitmonchan | Withered Wasteland | Punch through soft terrain; hold ZR for continuous use |
Rototiller | Drilbur | Withered Wasteland | Till soil for farming; relocate plants intact |
Jump | Magikarp | Withered Wasteland | Press R to jump |
Surf | Lapras | Bleak Beach | Swim on water; PP drains while active |
Camouflage | Zorua | Bleak Beach | Transform into nearby objects |
Suck Up Liquids | Paldean Wooper | Bleak Beach | Extract water, mud, or hot spring liquids |
Rollout | Graveler | Rocky Ridges | Roll at high speed; destroys blocks fast |
Glide | Dragonite | Sparkling Skylands | Aerial gliding after jumping |
Waterfall | Gyarados | Sparkling Skylands | Travel up waterfalls while surfing |
Magnet Rise | Post-game unlock | Post-game | Fly vertically; place and absorb blocks |
Several of Ditto's moves can be temporarily powered up by eating specific cooked meals:
Food Type | Powered Move | Effect |
|---|---|---|
Soup | Water Gun | Increased spray range |
Bread | Cut | Extended cutting range |
Hamburger Steak | Rock Smash | Temporarily punches hard materials |
Salad | Leafage | Can create duckweed on water surfaces |
At the start of the game, players choose from 7 base hairstyles and 28 hair color shades for their Ditto's human form. Appearance can be changed at any time by interacting with a mirror object, which can be found in the world, crafted, or purchased from the PC Shop.
Ditto can also wear outfits found as "Human Records" scattered throughout the game world. Each outfit references a classic Pokemon character or trainer class, such as a Ninja Outfit (referencing Koga), a Sailor Outfit (found on the SS Anne), and a Team Rocket Outfit (found in the Game Corner).
Blob reversion: Ditto can revert to its natural pink blob form to squeeze through tight spaces. This happens automatically when the player encounters narrow gaps.
Up to 5 followers: Up to five befriended Pokemon can follow Ditto at once, passively performing their specialties as they travel.
Return Home: Ditto can teleport to its Ditto Flag home at any time via the Pokedex menu.
