Cubone and the Grave with Flowers
April 25, 2026 at 03:20 PM
Initial article for the Cubone Grave with Flowers habitat lore.
The Grave with Flowers habitat in Pokemon Pokopia is the only habitat that attracts the Cubone line. Built by surrounding an existing gravestone with four Wildflowers, the habitat triggers one of the most emotionally resonant moments in the game when Cubone or Marowak arrives.
There is a pre-existing gravestone southwest of the Withered Wasteland Pokemon Center, on a small cliff. To create the Grave with Flowers habitat:
Travel to the cliff southwest of the Withered Wasteland Pokemon Center.
Locate the existing gravestone (it cannot be moved or recreated elsewhere via standard means).
Plant four Wildflowers around the gravestone. You can grow Wildflowers from seeds or relocate pre-grown ones using the Rototiller move.
Wait. After some in-game time, Cubone or Marowak will visit the grave.
When Cubone first arrives at the habitat and the player interacts with it, Cubone says:
"Mom prob'ly woulda liked a place like this too..."
This single line connects Cubone's appearance in the habitat to the Pokemon's well-known tragic backstory from earlier games:
In the original Pokemon Red and Blue, the Marowak Ghost in Pokemon Tower (Lavender Town) was killed by Team Rocket and could not move on until silenced.
Cubone's official Pokedex entries explicitly state that Cubone wears the skull of its dead mother as a helmet and cries for her every night.
Cubone evolves into Marowak only when it has come to terms with its mother's death.
By having Cubone arrive specifically at a grave decorated with flowers, Pokopia connects the in-game habitat construction to a 30-year piece of Pokemon lore.
Marowak can also visit the Grave with Flowers habitat, although it is rarer than Cubone. When it appears, the visual storytelling is even more poignant: the same Pokemon line that lost its mother to Team Rocket is now visiting a peaceful grave decorated with flowers, having come to terms with the loss enough to evolve.
After befriending Cubone via the habitat, players may notice that Cubone often sleeps next to the grave at night. This behavior is unique to Cubone and reinforces its grief. No other Pokemon in the game has comparable scripted behavior tied to a habitat element.
The Grave with Flowers habitat is the only place in the entire game where the Cubone line spawns. Players who want to register Cubone or Marowak in their Pokedex must build this habitat. The mechanic effectively forces every player to engage with the emotional storytelling tied to Cubone's lore.
Plant the Wildflowers as soon as you have access to the seeds. Cubone is one of the easier Pokemon to befriend once the habitat exists, and the early start gives you Cubone's habitat slot for the rest of the game.
Use Photo Mode to capture the moment Cubone first sleeps at the grave. It is one of the most photogenic scenes in the game.
Place the Grave with Flowers habitat near other habitats so Cubone has Pokemon neighbors. Despite the somber theme, Cubone benefits from social proximity for comfort level purposes.
Marowak is rarer than Cubone at this habitat. If you specifically need Marowak for Pokedex completion, build the habitat early and keep returning.
