Initial version (2026-03-16)
Pokemon Pokopia is available in two formats: a physical edition and a digital edition. Unlike many modern games, there is no Deluxe Edition, Special Edition, or Season Pass available. Both editions cost the same price and contain identical content.
Edition | Price | Format | Key Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
Physical Edition | $69.99 USD | Case with Game-Key Card | Requires internet download; cartridge needed in console to play |
Digital Edition | $69.99 USD | Nintendo eShop download | No physical cartridge required; may require Virtual Game Card for multiple Switch 2 systems |
The physical edition comes with a case and a Game-Key Card. This is a departure from traditional game cartridges. The Game-Key Card does not contain the game data itself; instead, it provides a code that initiates a download. However, you still need to have the Game-Key Card inserted in your console to play the game after downloading. Pokemon Pokopia is the first Pokemon game to use this game-key card format for physical distribution, reflecting the Nintendo Switch 2's hardware changes.
The digital edition is downloaded directly from the Nintendo eShop. No physical card is required. If you own multiple Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, you may need to load a Virtual Game Card to play on secondary systems.
Pokemon Pokopia does not have a Deluxe Edition, Collector's Edition, or any other premium version. The game does not have any alternate editions or versions. Both the physical and digital editions contain the same content.
Early purchasers of either edition receive a Ditto Rug item, which can be used as a decoration in your house. Certain retailers may offer additional shop-specific bonuses on top of the Ditto Rug.
Pokemon Pokopia is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. There is no Nintendo Switch 1 version. Players on the original Switch can only access the game through GameShare with a Switch 2 owner, which allows limited participation but restricts many features.
The GameShare feature allows Switch 2 owners to share the game for free with another console. GameShare is exclusively available in Palette Town and comes in two forms: local wireless (compatible with both Switch 1 and Switch 2) and online via GameChat (Switch 2 only). GameShare participants have limited functionality and cannot build, craft, use the PC, enter houses, or play mini games.
