Expanded Sasaki Ganryu with Oni Gauntlet confirmation, unhinged characterization, SGF 2025 reveal, voice actors, boss fight context
Sasaki Ganryu, historically better known as Sasaki Kojirō, is a confirmed rival swordsman and boss fight in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Capcom uses the stylistic Ganryu name rather than Kojirō to match his in-world framing.
The real Sasaki Kojirō is most famous for his 1612 duel with Musashi Miyamoto on the small island later named Ganryujima after him. The duel is a foundational moment in Japanese martial history and one of the most-retold episodes in samurai fiction. The game leans on that legacy by placing Ganryu directly across from Musashi as a named boss encounter.
Capcom confirmed at Summer Game Fest 2025 that Sasaki Ganryu also wears an Oni Gauntlet. Coverage from that reveal describes him as drunk on the power the gauntlet has given him, painting him as a rival who has leaned fully into corruption while Musashi tries to keep his own use of the artefact in check. RPG Site's Summer Game Fest preview describes his portrayal as more unhinged and borderline villainous than earlier incarnations of the character in media.
The gamescom 2025 playable demo ended with a duel against Ganryu at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Hands-on previews describe the fight as Capcom's showcase for the Break Issen body-part targeting mechanic: the fight does not end from a single stamina break, and every Break Issen window makes the player choose between red-zone damage strikes and purple-zone soul gains. The Tokyo Game Show 2025 stage demo used the same boss fight, played live by Musashi's Japanese voice actor Yoshimasa Hosoya.
