Kubi Akari

Created page for the Kubi Akari Genma covering its attacks, folklore framing and its charm namesake
Kubi Akari is a Genma that drifts through the sky with an eerie glow. It is one of the most-shown enemies in Onimusha: Way of the Sword's marketing, appearing in trailers and on the official site well before the game's systems were detailed, and it has since become the namesake of the charm granted for keeping demo save data.
Despite its small, drifting profile, Kubi Akari is a genuine complication rather than filler. Capcom describes it as a tricky opponent for Musashi Miyamoto with three distinct threats.
Ability | Effect |
|---|---|
Soul absorption | Absorbs nearby souls, competing with Musashi for the same battlefield resource the Oni Gauntlet depends on. |
Glowing projectiles | Spits glowing projectiles from its mouth, pressuring the player at range. |
Self-destruct | Unleashes self-destruct attacks, which turns ignoring one into its own risk. |
The soul-absorption behaviour is the most disruptive of the three, because it puts Kubi Akari in direct conflict with the souls economy that funds healing, upgrades and Oni Armaments. Leaving one alive during a larger fight costs resources as well as attention.
Capcom has leaned into the contrast between how Kubi Akari looks and how it sounds. The development team notes that its unique voice and chatter give it a strange but lovable charm despite its creepy appearance, and players at the Tokyo Game Show 2025 stage event asked for a plush version, which the design team then illustrated. No merchandise has been confirmed.
The director has drawn an explicit line to Japanese folklore around detached and elongated heads. While the Rokurokubi is the better known of the two for its stretching neck, older legends describe the Nukekubi, a creature whose head detaches completely and flies around.
Capcom frames this carefully. Rather than stating that Kubi Akari is a Nukekubi, the studio suggests that people living in the world of Onimusha might connect those ancient tales with the Genma they actually see, and leaves how those legends get told as something the game explores. The folklore is presented as in-world interpretation, not as a confirmed origin.
Players who keep their save data from the demo can claim a Kubi Akari charm in the full game. Like all charms it is claimed through the Spirit Mirror and equipped from the Charms section of the Equipment screen, and Capcom states that equipping it applies beneficial effects to Musashi. Demo progress itself does not carry into the base game; the charm is the entire reward.
