The Johari Shard is a valuable item that guides Musashi to locations across Edo-Era Kyoto. It is obtained at a certain point in the story, and is meant to be used whenever a player is unsure of how to reach their current destination.

How It Works

While exploring the Eastern Kyoto area, holding both triggers together causes the Johari Shard to shine a light pointing toward the destination. This gives a direct, in-world way to navigate without needing to constantly check the map screen.

A Valuable, Not a Consumable

Because the Johari Shard is classed as a valuable rather than an ordinary item, it does not need to be carried on Musashi's person and it is never consumed or used up, no matter how often it is called on. Once obtained, it simply remains available for the rest of the playthrough.

On the Screen

A dedicated icon on the game screen shows whenever the Johari Shard is available to use, so a player does not need to remember to check for it manually while deciding how to reach a destination.

Working Alongside the Map

The Johari Shard is meant to complement, not replace, the main map screen. Story destinations and Spirit Mirror locations are already marked on the map, but once a player is actually out walking toward one and loses track of the exact route, holding both triggers gives a moment-to-moment answer without pulling up a full map view.

Not Bound by the Item Limit

Ordinary items are restricted to six equipped types at once for quick access, but the Johari Shard sits outside that system entirely as a valuable. It never has to be swapped in or out of an item slot to be used, which is part of why it does not need to be carried on Musashi's person in the first place.

Practical Notes

The Johari Shard is most useful when a destination marker sits far away or across unfamiliar ground; rather than tracing a route by eye on the map, holding both triggers and following the light is usually the faster way to close the distance, particularly while pursuing a Mysteries of Kyoto or Chance Encounters lead across an area of Eastern Kyoto that has not been fully explored yet.
