Stagger System

Updated article with break meter details, parry interaction, and Discord reaction synergy
The stagger system is a core combat mechanic in Neverness to Everness that provides a structured way to create damage windows against tough enemies. Every enemy above basic mobs has a visible break meter displayed beneath their health bar. Landing hits and performing successful dodges fill this meter. When the meter is completely filled, the enemy enters a vulnerable state where all incoming damage is significantly increased.
Standard attacks, character skills, and certain dodge actions all contribute to filling the enemy's break meter. The rate at which the meter fills depends on the attack type and the Break Intensity stat of the character's equipped Arc (weapon). Characters with higher Break Intensity fill the meter faster, making them particularly valuable in boss encounters where triggering the stagger state quickly is essential.
The parrying system interacts directly with the stagger system. A successful parry contributes a significant amount to the enemy's break meter in addition to instantly filling the character's Esper Cycle meter. This dual benefit makes parrying one of the most efficient actions in combat, rewarding skilled timing with both elemental reaction setup and accelerated stagger progression.
The advanced trio elemental reaction called Discord (triggered when a target is under both Nova and Scorch simultaneously) directly reduces a percentage of the target's break capacity. This makes the break meter permanently smaller, so subsequent staggers happen faster. Lacrimosa's passive ability (Tomato Banquet) amplifies this by reducing the target's break capacity by 10% for 60 seconds each time Discord triggers, stacking up to a 30% reduction.
Once the break meter is filled and the enemy staggers, all incoming damage is amplified for a limited window. Coordinating burst damage from multiple characters during this vulnerability period is the most effective strategy against high-HP enemies and bosses. Teams that can trigger stagger quickly and then follow up with concentrated damage during the window will clear encounters significantly faster.
