Expanded with confirmed details on Oddity nature, resident permits, and known examples
Oddities are sentient supernatural beings that live alongside humans and Espers in Hethereau. They are distinct from Anomalies in a fundamental way: while anomalies are phenomena (entities, objects, locations, or memes that defy common sense), Oddities are specifically the sentient creatures that exist within the supernatural ecosystem. An anomaly might be a strange weather event or a cursed object; an Oddity is a living, thinking being with its own personality and goals.
Despite their supernatural origins, Oddities have integrated into Hethereau's society to a significant degree. They walk the streets, hold jobs, and interact with humans on a daily basis. The coexistence is not always seamless, but Hethereau has developed systems and institutions to manage the relationship between ordinary citizens and these extraordinary creatures.
To legally reside in Hethereau, Oddities must obtain resident permits from the Bureau of Anomaly Control. In the Bureau's main hall, hopeful Oddities can be seen queuing up for their permits, going through what appears to be a formal registration process. This system reflects how Hethereau treats Oddities as recognized members of society rather than threats to be contained. The permit system gives Oddities legal standing and, in return, allows the Bureau to keep track of supernatural residents within the city.
The existence of the permit system also suggests that there are Oddities living outside the system, without official registration. Whether unlicensed Oddities face consequences or simply live on the margins of society is part of the broader tension between the supernatural and bureaucratic worlds in Hethereau.
The most well-known Oddity in the game is Taygedo, a gentle and harmless creature who works at Eibon Antique Shop as the resident restorer. Taygedo has a TV-shaped head, a squirrel-like body, and communicates by repeating his own name, similar to how Pokemon speak in their franchise. He has won the title of "Eibon's Best Restorer" three times, a testament to his skill despite his unusual nature.
Taygedo's presence at Eibon highlights the normalization of Oddities in Hethereau's daily life. He is a valued member of the shop's crew, respected by the other staff members for his restoration abilities. His personality is endearing rather than threatening, which reflects the game's broader tone: the supernatural world is strange and sometimes unsettling, but it is also full of charming, likeable beings who just happen to be something other than human.
