Apricrocs

Initial article: Apricroc combat culture, hostility toward humans, and failed cannon project from the official January 2025 creature report (2026-06-11)
The Apricrocs are the second of two sentient, non-human species documented in Northern Eufaula, the border region where My Time at Evershine takes place. Like the Gnawers, they are known entirely from one official lore post: an in-world report on the region's sentient creatures published in January 2025, written by Professor Goodall for Director Gaudi of the North Development Plan. The game is unreleased, and everything below is pre-release worldbuilding that may change before launch.
The report exists for a practical reason: with the human population in the region historically low, both species grew to sizeable numbers over the previous thirty years, and the North Development Plan's settlers were about to move in next to them. Goodall's account is a briefing for that program, not natural history, and its Apricroc section reads accordingly.
Goodall spent five years making expeditions into the region, but where the professor could sit and watch the Gnawers work, the Apricrocs had to be observed from a distance for the professor's own safety. The result is a much thinner account than the Gnawer chapters, and a far more alarmed one.
Apricroc society is aggressive and values strength above all else. Both male and female Apricrocs are trained from a young age in different arts of mortal combat. The report describes the species as territorial and, in Goodall's words, overall very primitive: they do not speak the human language well, and the professor admits being unable to work out their social structure from long range. Beyond the emphasis on fighting, almost nothing about how they organize themselves is on record.
The Apricrocs seldom interact with humans except through armed conflict. The report records no trade, negotiation, or peaceful contact of any kind, a sharp contrast with the Gnawer Cartel's long-running commerce with Ethean, Alliance, and Duvosian traders. That standing hostility is the reason Goodall's observations stayed at a distance in the first place.
The report's most memorable passage is about engineering. Goodall watched the Apricrocs build something akin to a cannon, copied from a relic left over from an earlier war between the Alliance and Duvos, and turn it on the expedition's observation post. The attempt failed, partly because they could not manage round wheels, and the weapon blew up inside their own camp instead.
They did not give up. By the time the expedition left the area a season later, Goodall had counted more than eleven explosions from the failed cannon project. The professor reads the episode as occasional imitation of human behavior and ingenuity: crude and dangerous, but stubbornly persistent.
Goodall's conclusion for the North Development Plan is a warning rather than an invitation. The Apricrocs are a dangerous, territorial species that will cause a lot of problems, and settlers are advised to be wary of them. No exceptions or friendly cases are noted anywhere in the report.
The report frames the two species as opposites, which is easiest to see side by side:
Trait | Gnawers | Apricrocs |
|---|---|---|
Society | Organized, industrious Cartel under the Tycoognawer | Aggressive, strength-first, structure unknown |
Human language | Spoken since first contact | Spoken poorly |
Contact with humans | Trades wood products with all three powers | Armed conflict only |
Report's advice | Can be reasoned with if respected | Be wary; expect problems |
Combat is a confirmed part of Evershine: official material shows the Governor and companions fighting monsters and driving off bandit raids that threaten the settlement. The Apricrocs have not been confirmed as an enemy type, though. No encounter, stat, or quest involving them has appeared in public posts, and the closed alpha playtest is under a non-disclosure agreement. The creature report positions them as the frontier's obvious source of trouble, but how that translates into actual gameplay is unknown ahead of the 2027 release window.
